I never said that Jack specifically was one of tvs all time greats. I think Jack has been more tolerable this season than in the previous ones, and we'll just leave it at that.
But he's arguably the main character of the show.
If the emotional center of the show is weak, what does that leave you with?
Just saying, making a statement like "Lost has some of TV's greatest characters ever," is a big statement. It's the same thing as saying, "Lost is one of the smartest shows in history." It's just not true.

Ben, Locke, Sawyer, Desmond, and Sayid will go down as some of the greatest characters in television history, so yeah LOST does have some of TV's greatest characters.

Ben
The only one with maybe an argument. But Ben has his problems. First, he was one of the worst about talking around answers for a long time. Second, they pulled the man behind the curtain trick with him, which makes his character irrelevant later on. I think the love for Ben has more to do with Emerson's performance (which is the best on the show by far) rather than the actual character.
quote:
Locke
Who only existed for 3 and a half seasons. Locke now isn't Locke. And his character was annoying before he died, and was super annoying while MIB before we knew.
quote:
Sawyer
Too cliche' to be one of the "greatest" ever. He's Wolverine without claws. We've seen the cool gruff hero guy way too many times. Although I do like his character, he's not revolutionary or anything.
You do realize the Jack/Sawyer/Kate are just Cyclops/Wolverine/Jean Grey?
quote:
Desmond
Disappears too often.
quote:
Sayid
Often as stupid as Jack, and suffers from the same fate of not asking the right questions when he could. Little character development as well with him.

Really? One show has 4 of the greatest characters ever?

You're just nitpicking here.

4 and a 1/2, but still what does it matter how long the character was in the series. He was still a fantastic character regardless and I never really found him annoying, except for Season 2 of course.

Just because he shares similarities with Wolverine I don't think makes him cliche. There is one aspect that Sawyer most of these other bad boys don't have though: high intelligence. In the show I'd say only Ben, Faraday (and he's just books smart, but stupid as hell in street smarts), Jacob, and MIB may be smarter than him. On the outside he may seem like another bad boy like Han Solo, but bad boys usually go with the flow. Sawyer is more of a planner than anything and he doesn't like going into a situation without a step-by-step plan planned out perfectly.

Again, it doesn't have much to do with how good of a character they actually are.

Don't know where you're getting at with lack of character development. The very depths of pretty much everyone don't change much. They may learn from their mistakes and do them differently from that point on, but Sayid as the show has shown is just a natural killer. Sayid's character radically changed from Season 3 and in each season onward. He kept the basics, but since he lost Nadia, the way he perceives himself has changed greatly. He tries to change being a killer, but just always fails miserably, and that is the tragedy behind the character because he can't change the very depths of his personality as much as he tries.

If IMDb had a top 250 TV characters, I'd say that Ben and Locke would make the top 100 (probably even 50), Sawyer and Desmond in the top 150, and Sayid rounding in somewhere in the 200s. Granted IMDb is not the best source, but still.

Because the fans have more of a clue than the writers do. See the responses in this thread.
The show spent more time with the build up than the did with the finish.

We don't even know what the finish is, so how can you say that?

They have already said they can't answer all the questions.

God forbid we aren't getting the answers to the Deck Incident. What will we do? You're right, the show falls completely apart since we aren't going to have the Deck Incident fully explained to us.
But to be honest, the questions people are talking about the writers not answering are the ones the writers never intended to be questions. Just because we don't know every little detail about a character's background doesn't mean it is a real mystery. Any mystery that the writers think that it is a legitimate question and they know they aren't going to answer it they are answering in the podcasts. If they answered every single question that any fan could possibly come up with, then the show would suck during its final season, and even then they'd have to bring up more minute questions answering the question really did.
For instance, they said they weren't going to exactly explain why Frank wasn't on the plane, but in the last episode Frank just said he slept in. Do we need to know why he slept in? No, and thats another unanswered question from the dumb hardcore mind that needs everything answered. We just need the big picture, which we are getting, not every minute and unimportant detail.

TLDR and proves my point.

No, I just proved that only stupid fricktards think that every minute little detail needs answering, which it doesn't.

I think you're confused by questions that people want answered and shite that doesn't matter. Lepidus is so inconsequential at this point that this question was never a problem.

no I'm not. These are the type of questions the writers said they aren't answering, an everyone is blowing it out of proportion thinking they will only answer half of the major mysteries.

I think the success of Lost is definitely a combination of the mythos and the characters. Some may not like the characters (and that's fine), but I believe many others do. I'm emotionally invested in these characters. It's why some average (or worse) episodes are still good to me - I get more info on the characters.
I know I'm in the minority, but I like the Jack character. Kate is probably the one that I don't really like, but I'm still interested in her story. She lost me with the whole mother/Aaron shift - just didn't appeal to me. Sayid is probably my favorite character with Sawyer running a close second.

I think the answer to the original question is pretty straightforward...
It's a mystery. People who enjoy mystery movies and shows have probably never experienced a mystery movie/show that that ran so deep for so long. Throw in some interesting and very diverse characters, several twists turns and revelations, and a pursuit of answers to issues that have nagged mankind for years (i.e. - why are we here, good vs. evil, fate vs. freewill, etc.) and you get a very addictive series.

I'd have to say only Ben will really stand out as memorable. Maybe Jack b/c he seems to be the main character.
However, I will say every episode with Desmond as the focus has always been a great one IMO.

This is probably the gayest shite I've read on here in a while. You could have posted that you like having sex with men and it would have the same message.

i'm kinda dying to know what critics of lost consider better network tv shows (drama) through the years.
i think twin peaks was mentioned before which was a great show for the better part of one season. but i'm interested to know what surpasses Lost so easily. network tv wise.
