It's about a rebel team stealing the plans for the death star.

Completely unnecessary, but could be fun if done well. "You're rebels, I rebel" is the antithesis of "done well".

It's essentially a prequel. I've seen no evidence of original thought in what has been shown. Disney loves formulas and having their movie plots and characters be the result of corporate demographic research.

can great art exist in this setting? Possibly, but not likely. It can be a good movie, but the chances of it being a great film are not strong.

All childhood love aside.

Disney loves formulas

But honestly no one does formula better than Disney. Disney is VERY good at making top notch formula movies.

Plus, I don't understand your argument. Most Star Wars fans want formula Star Wars movies. In the 1990s, Star Wars fans nearly burned down Hollywood when (of all people) Lucas made 3 Star Wars movies that veered away from the proven formula he created in the late 1970s.

The Lucaslash was so severe that he pretty said "frick it" and retired.

The prequels were terrible for a thousand reasons none of which had to do with not following a formula.

Also true of Marvel fans. Disney is running that formula into the ground too.

If Disney lets it be a full blown R rated war Star Wars movie then maybe but Disney will probably hold it back from being an R rated war movie and will be more of a kids movie so probably not.

That is less than inspiring, and not grounds for qualifying as "the best Star Wars yet."

It amazes me how many people mix up the death stars.

Mon Mothma said "many Bothans died" in Jedi not in A New Hope.

There was way too much smoke that this thing was a complete mess. I also don't believe that Disney would ever make a really dark war film.

The mess came from Disney execs thinking the original cut was too dark. That's what led to reshoots, or so I've read.

In a way, that kind of gives me hope that this will at least be decent. It won't be Saving Private Ryan gritty, but maybe the storyline is pretty good and there will be fun action throughout.

Setting childhood love to the side, I think it can be done. They do have their issues, but do stand up to the test of time. Maybe some of the best examples of that.

No upcoming SW movie will have the WOW factor for us old people, but we have never really had a depth filled movie either. Lucas tried with the prequels, but it was beyond his skill set.

The originals were special. Have you ever seen the Knights of the Old Republic mini movies on Youtube? They show a Stars Wars I always wanted to see. Such a huge universe but the new movies still cling to the Death Star and the events of 40 ago.

Empire Strikes Back is one of the best movies that has ever been made.

I doubt Rogue one can top that
