I never considered Fagan to be a great singer, but you're correct that his style played a considerable role in their sound. From a recording standpoint, he had exactly what record companies looked for....a unique voice that was easily identifiable to listeners.
Of course MTV came along and changed the game.
As for your question, I think it would be strange to hear the Police without Sting.
