So I guess we are sticking with pop/rock guitarist because classical guitarist are heads and shoulders better than pop/rock guys. So ..
Robert Fripp
Richard Thompson
Stephen Malkmus
Graham Parsons

Dude I have no problem with anyone people want to list. It's you guitar heroes that get bent out of shape that are the problem.

There’s so many guitarist out there that we don’t know about that’s always better than the next guy. But you cannot have this conversation without having John Petrucci in here for that matter all of the crew from dream theater are pretty much, the most educated and original composers of music in days music!

You rate EVH as the most talented MUSICIAN of the last 50 years. I wasn't aware that he played anything other than guitar. Did he play other instruments? I honestly don't know. And if he didn't, how in the HELL can you claim he's the best MUSICIAN? By the way, I liked him and the group, especially with DLR, A LOT.

To me, Prince is CLEARLY the best all around musician ever. That cat had #1 songs, and ENTIRE albums where he played every instrument and sang every note. And they sold big. It doesn't get better than that.

It's a good thing there is no real answer to this question as it has been discussed here ad naueseum

But there are some sad responses being thrown out here

Question that can’t be answered absolutely. Too many musicians, not all famous, a lot no longer with us. What’s the criteria? Innovation, technical, artistic, inspirational, etc? Every time you identify one another comes along. I grew up a huge fan of the likes of Santana, Page, Hendrix and then Ted Nugent and Eddie Van Halen. Then discovered Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Toy Clark, Glen Campbell and Tommy Emmanuel. Then the new cats came along; Joe Bonamassa, Eric Gale and so many other talented young artists. It’s a great question as a way to promote conversation among like minded folks but there will never be a definitive answer.

EVH was unreal. But as far as the best musician of the last 50 years would be Prince.

Alot less well known in the main stream, but Buckethead as well IMO. Many people think he's just all shred, but his catalogue and differing styles of music is impressive.

I don't believe there is a "best" just quite a few that crossed the goal line into greatness. My favorite is Brian May of Queen but I don't believe for a second that he's "the best".

John Butler is great and one of my favorites, but calling anyone the BEST EVER is going to get a downvote. There is just way too much competition to label anyone the absolute best.

Also, calling for a bookmark is an immediate downvote. You oversold this!
