How about "in the middle of the night"?
Every person around me at jazz fest said "he sings that?" Lol
Amazing show, I really love New York State of mind, I can really feel the passion he has for his home. Very similar to the passion many Louisiana artists have for their home

Actually the song is called "River of Dreams" and it's a good one for sure.

Don't Ask Me Why is good but "Scenes" is his best song.

No, he doesn't suck for other reasons

Best is "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" followed by "Captain Jack".

Explain how his non 70s music hasn't aged well.

He's got a few good non 70s songs but Uptown Girl is atrocious.
He got better in the 90s. I Go To Extremes, Leningrad, Downeaster Alexa, And So It Goes, and All About Soul are all pretty good 90s songs.

I actually agree with this. His 70s and very early 90s stuff was his best. I just disagree that his 80s stuff wasn't good. Uptown Girl was a crappy song but Allentown, Pressure, and This Is the Time are solid songs. Matter of Trust is one of my favorite songs of his. His 80s work had a lot more throw away songs than his 70s and early 90s work but there were still a few very good songs he made in the 80s.

Have you heard his 60's music when he was with the Hassles?
Billy Joel: The Hassles (COMPLETE CATALOGUE 1967-1969)

So many people seem to write off a lot of very good music the great musicians of the 60s and 70s did in the 80s and early 90s for some reason. Billy Joel is a perfect example of this.
I definitely do that. My friends and I played the hell out of Piano Man and Turnstiles but just lost interest in him after that as his popularity took off. I've had the same pattern with Elton John and Bruce Springsteen and several other bands (Pat Green included) as well. Not sure if a part of me just doesn't want to like a popular band or if the music got dumbed down so that it would sell. I like to think it is the dumbing down thing.

I think his greatest strength is the diversity of his songs. One of my favorites.

That's an honest assessment. A lot of people naturally dislike what is popular and I understand why early BJ, Springstein, and Elton John fans are loyal to their early work. Having said that, I look at Billy Joel's work as a whole. His work from the early 70s to the early 90s was fantastic. Who gives a s### if he had some bad songs during that time period. All I know is he had some awesome hit singles in all three decades (70s, 80s, 90s).

So I'm not a disinterested party.

I think so many rock purists write off all his non 70s music so he gets pigeon holed as being a has been
I always looked at him as a 'pop artist' in the 70's, and thought he was an idiot the time he called himself the "Jimi Hendrix of the keyboards"...give me a break!
But, now that I am older (old?)I don't mind listening to his songs, which I guess compared to today's so called pop music is a godsend. Today's pop is unacceptable rubbish...just goes to show you can sell any crap to kids...
