Chilly Water

This album-opening track sets the tone for the next 50 minutes of incredible rock and roll groove/jam. Widespread Panic’s “Space Wrangler” gets regular rotation a few times a year from me. Though I usually listen to the live shows, this debut studio release from 1988 is a masterpiece.
Chilly Water
In the easy chair with my boots on
Melted whiskey in my hand
I couldn't have been asleep for more than three hours
Time to go to work again
Once more I beat the sunrise
And there's a dark breeze at my door
Raise the water from the well up to my face
How could a man like me be poor
As long as there's water
Chilly wet water
Gimme some of that cool water
Well, my horse's eyes are glassy
He breathed the city in his lungs last night
I lead his natural body
To the trough to regain his might
Red rooster crow them blues here
That Old Blue he round the bull
And the mornin's crying rays of sunrise
It hasn't rained for three weeks full
As long as there's water

Gimme some of that cool, cool water
Venus light is rising
I lay my buckets inside the shed
And there's a man I see - a stranger
Leaning on the gate outside my fence
Said "I'm riding out from the city
Where they started holding water back last night
I was hoping I could get a drink from your well
Before I ride on to another city tonight"

I’m not a big widespread fan at all but I’ve always loved this album, it’s incredible.

Nothing more euphoric than being at a Panic show when they play chilly and having the entire crowd just throw water up in the air when the first chorus hits.
It's my go to monday morning driving to work song... never fails

This was the song that got me into WP. Love both the studio and live versions, especially the live version from Panic in the Streets. Whole album is awesome and is one of the GOAT albums for long haul drives.

Did someone call..
Went to my first WSP Show in 89 at The Nick in BHam . Summer before my freshman year at Bama. Got to see them in bars, at band Parties and other small venues in the beginning. Beent to 250+ with at least 200 of them from 89to94 ..then just hit major holiday or special venues til 02.

I don't know how I missed it, but there is a great Panic podcast called Bluest Tape on Spotify. Found it last week.
