Thoughts?

Not serious enough about guitar playing to drop a few grand for an original Les Paul. Mostly like to just mess around with it every now and then.

Anyone familiar with the Epiphone versions?

its a fine product for a comparatively entry level. go play one and see if you like how it feels, beyond liking the name.

You can get better guitars used for the same money.

Or get an Agile if you're only interested in an LP. better quality than an Epi, anyway.

they look good, but they sound...empty for the money. Also, the wood grain is really just a decal. Take a look at Agile or MVG (Miami Vintage Guitars) instead for a similarly priced Les Paul copy that sounds much better. I play an MVG that I got with a hard case for $400, and the sound quality really impresses anyone who listens to it or plays it.

A blindfolded beginner might not notice a difference, but somebody that's been playing a few years is gonna know.

This depends upon which Epi you are comparing to which Gibson. Not all Epis are crappy $300-400 models, and not all Gibsons will blow your socks off.

This! I would rather have one of the $600-$700 Epiphones than any of the $800-$1300 Gibsons.

Yea, the Epiphone Elitist and Masterbuilt models are a different story altogether. I had a Masterbuilt acoustic that was nice. Nowhere near as nice as the custom shop Hummingbird I have now, but nice all the same.

They're okay, but if you're like me you will eventually want the Gibson model and will be stuck with an Epiphone that's only worth half of its original price.

In that case, I would just go play a few in that price range, and just puck what looks and feels the best

They're fine guitars.I own one and a legit les Paul, it was money well spent. Get the flamed top.

This is the OPs conundrum. I think many epiphones of various models are fantastic. But you have to play them and know what you are looking for. In general, epiphones of today are average.....but any individual guitar can be great......just get it and you will probably be happy.

They're great. I got an epi les paul a few years ago. Since then I replaced the input jack and the string tuning knobs with Gibson parts, put an Alnico Pro 2 in the neck and a pearly gates in the bridge, replaced the bridge with a Gibson part, replaced the nut with bone and added push pull pots on the volume and tuning knobs. I love it.

I went to guitar center for months and played everyone I could get my hands on until I found one I liked. It was a great buy.

This is how I bought my last car, and might be the way to go.

I picked out an old rust bucket from the junkyard. Put a whole new engine in it. Hammered out all the dents and sprayed new paint. Replaced the upholstery and put on a new set of tires. Great car. Couldn't be happier.

I prefer the SG's though. The Les Paul's get heavy if you play a while standing up.

Epiphones are great. I have an SG i've had since in was 17 (currently 24) that I used for playing with friends, a few shows, and practicing at home. I upgraded the pickups to some hum buckers, but considering I spent probably about 450 total and would have spent way more on a Gibson, it did just fine for me.
