Great call. Always out of step with the world, but just a great band. Making Movies is such a good album.

The critics may rate them appropriately, but they certainly don't have a large following or mass appeal
I think, regarding the general public, they are underrated

Old 97s
Huge fan of Old 97s library and Miller's solo discs. Also love Grand Champeen's first two efforts, but not their third.
To clarify, on most folks mentions of fav bands being underrated. Sure, media and critics may love them, but most folks bands listed thus far, have modest sales when compared to the mainstream fodder atop the charts. Thus what I consider "underrated"..even if critic darlings.

I'll have to go with:
dredg
Dub Trio
Fair to Midland
Mew
Opeth
And I'll throw in a wildcard:
Silverchair

King's X and Silverchair are both really good bands.

Jamiroquai- went to a show expecting a studio band and a likewise stage performance, left thinking they might be the best live band ever. First few records are great, less in love with later ones.

not underrated at all. any real hip hop head knows guru is one of the best mcs ever and premo delivers on the beats.
i say ween. they dont get enough credit for their musical diversity.

I think I would consider them underachieving, not underrated. They were given a ton of hype with their debut album and couldnt really hold on to mainstream appeal after their first few hits.
