Not just the song but his performance is one of his best

Obviously the King has so many great performances from 1954 to 1977. But to me this 68 performance is the height of it all. He looked fantastic, he sounded fantastic and he killed this awesome song. The context of this performance is important. Even though I wasn’t even born yet looking back on it, this is just brilliant.

Teddy Bear too. I remember singing along with my mom when I was little.

This thread reminds me that I need to reread Needful Things by Stephen King. Anyone who has read the book knows the reference.

Couple thoughts in response…

As someone who is old enough to understand how short a time 23 years is, it’s amazing to me how short Elvis’ active career was. And a couple were lost to military service. He had such an impact on music history in such a short time.

The ‘68 comeback performance was brilliant and more successful in resurrecting his music and performance career than anyone expected it would be. It’s a damn shame his friends didn’t do a better job of standing up to him about his addiction and care about the man more than the money. Though in the presence of such an icon I’m not sure how much anyone could have had the courage to challenge him, fearing he’d remove them from his circle.

Lastly, I always reflect back to the Hawaii concert in ‘73 as the pinnacle. By all accounts he worked so hard to get his body in condition and really walked out on the stage that night looking fantastic and put on an amazing performance. He never got back to that level and was gone not long after.

Kentucky Rain. Very underrated.

Co-written by te late, great Eddie Rabbitt.

I usually disdain re-released versions of classic songs but this orchestral version of Kentucky Rain is awesome.
