I was going to say Nevermind but this would be a close second.

I've been wanting to start a thread on the reasons Vs. is better than Ten, but haven't had the time.

This is surprisingly difficult for me.

I keep wanting to say Nevermind, and then I feel like i'm slighting Vs. or I'm slighting STP

How do I pick........... I guess Nevermind

To comment on an early post about Zep IV I agree; that is my favorite album ever. frick cliche and the fact that everyone talks about that album, they do it because it is great.

That's my line of thinking too. I never considered Smashing Pumpkins, Bush(really?) or STP as grunge.

your inclination is correct, in my opinion--they aren't grunge. they didn't emerge from the Seattle scene and the sound is different as well. not arguing there weren't influences, but I wouldn't call them grunge.

people have a tendency to lump everything that was popular at the time into the grunge category but that isn't necessarily appropriate.

The term grunge was created about as fast as it was ignored by those who were labeled as such. And after a few years, any band with a single out was called grunge and then alternative.

I wore out VS. on my tape player - first cd ever had was STP Core and wore that out as well but I agree Soundgarden Superunknown was a game changer to me (although Black Hole Sun was so played out) I still loved that album

I used to have a first pressing of Vs. on vinyl that I bought from Paradise Records - a friend borrowed it and now it's gone.

It wasn't titled Vs. on mine. It was a self titled.

The Smashing Pumpkins never were "grunge." SP has such a distinctive sound, it can only be simplified as alternative rock and nothing more. It was a unique blend of psychadelic rock, new wave, classic rock and metal that no one has yet lived up to. And the fact that they had the balls to blend in electronica in to the mix in 1995 - when everyone was just grunge, grunge, grunge and no no no mainstream - was very far from grunge ethos.

Just because they were a new alternative rock band around at the same time as the "grunge" explosion does not classify them as grunge. The Smashing Pumpkins are too diverse and too musically transcendent to categorize, but if you tried, grunge would certainly not be one of them.

Grunge in a nutshell was punk rock, sludge/prog metal and alt.rock mixed into a melting pot.

I know they're from Australia and came out in like 95, but these guys sound an awful lot like Pearl Jam

I can agree with you thoughts about Smashing Pumkins, but what do you feel about STP?

I think Core could be considered grunge.
