Robert Duvall’s portrayal of Gus is probably 80% of the reason why I think Lonesome Dove is the best western ever made. I’ll probably try to watch all of the parts of the series, but I know his absence will be felt.
Team slumps happen every single season. Sometimes more than one. It’s a good time to get at least one of them out of the way.

For me, Lonesome Dove is the best western ever made. Obviously this is largely due to the amazing performance of Robert Duvall. He brought the character of Gus alive, and is probably my favorite fictional character ever written.
I’m about halfway through Return to Lonesome Dove right now and it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever watched, but there’s no comparison to the original.
John Voight pulls off about 50% of what Tommy Lee Jones did as Captain Call. This doesn’t feel like one I’ll be rewatching.
How do the other series stack up?
Are they worth watching?
