Swapping out a loaded pickguard. My son’s Indonesian base Squier strat. Pulled the guard and replaced it with my Fender MIM 50’s loaded guard.
I’ve switched out the guard before.

This time when finished I thankfully checked the PUPs before screwing in and stringing. 5 postition switch. Neck is good. Neck middle has very quiet neck. Middle has nothing and sometimes bridge pickup sounds. Middle bridge has good bridge and near silent middle. Bridge only sounds fine.

I’m sure it’s soldering issues. I touched nothing other than removing old jacks to output and the ground to the claw that were already in place

You may have a dead pickup. Put a multimeter on the middle pickup and make sure it works.

If you don't have a multimeter or don't know how to use one, examine the coil start and finish wires. If either or both coil start/finish wires are damaged, the pickup is dead and will not function.

I supply this diagram with all my Fender blueprint pickups as a warning. I overbuild Carondelets to better protect the coil start/finish, but I make my users aware of this as part of my warranty/return policy. You damage your coil ends, that's on you, not me.

I actually had a client's replacement pickguard show up a week ago in which ALL THREE Fender '59 reissue pickups were dead due to the guy who assembled the guard not being duly delicate during installation and damaging his coils.

FYI, actual Fender pickups are the worst for delicacy and durability in my bench experience too. I guess you get what you pay for.

Would each pickup being able to make sound at volume at certain positions of the 5-way switch rule out their being “dead” or not really.

My hunch was it being a poor solder job on the pot. Average from fender then worse from me.

Basically each PUP will make sound. And make normal sound. Just in the wrong switch positions?

Or is that still possibly a dead PUP

If I’m betting on me or Fender screwing the pooch, my money is on me. lol

Thanks in advance.

Also how much are your PUPS that you mentioned. The ones with the combo of Alnico 2 and 5 magnets. Or would you rather a message facebook.

Update/ Bump

Soldering skills are improving. Son got me an intro soldering station. I’ve been using soldering guns from the 60’s I think. lol. Too heavy for small work.

All pickups work but not at the proper position on switch. Fret said possibly a dead pick up. Is that still a possible diagnosis? Or is dead just dead? Never works?

Anyway. Going to string it tonight with strings I don’t care about much. See how it sounds. I either have a pile of crap or some modded out of phase masterpiece.

Understood.

lol. How much of a percentage of your pick up sales are for knuckleheads like me? Bedroom and couch guitarists too scared to play in public.

At least 80 percent of my business, from repairs and upgrades to custom pickups and guitars, are what I would classify as hobbyists. From bedroom players and home studio composers whose gear never leaves the house, to guys with regular day jobs who jam with their pals frequently and/or gig a couple weekends a month.

Thought so.

You still need a Houston branch.
