I like the album overall. It’s no Southeastern, but he’s not trying to make one and couldn’t if he tried. That was a once in a lifetime album. Several of the songs will be awesome live, and that’s where a lot of his songs grow on me. It’s fun to see them bring it to life on stage.
I’m not sure if not having Dave Cobb produce it was the right move. There’s a distinct difference in the mix. I’d put this on the level of Sirens In The Ditch, which makes sense since that was his last album without Dave Cobb.
I think my favorite song is King of Oklahoma. The last track is awesome, too.

First listen I actually kind of like it. The lyrics for the most part are pretty strong. I’m digging the heavier guitar sound on some of the songs. I think the pre-release singles might be the weakest songs on the album.
Save The World is by far the worst song. I’m too scared to speak to a lady at the grocery store because of gun violence. Give me a break.

I agree. The production is too much. Definitely feels very different than the Cobb albums. Too much going on at times.

I get some good Neil Young vibes from the album, especially the last song, which is great.

I like the album a lot
When we were close is my favorite after the first listen. Cast iron is of also really good
I actually might have to go see him when he comes to Nola in august/September now

I'm pretty sure in the line just before that he references hearing a balloon pop and he starts scanning for exits. I don't think he was just randomly scared of people in public.

How could he hear that over his mask?

Overall, this is his best album since Something More Than Free, IMO. Like all other Isbell songs, they get better with each listen as you discover a new line you missed previously.

Agree. Really strong album.
White Beretta surprised me a bit. It's well written, and another in a great line of Isbell story/narration songs, but a whole song about taking your girlfriend to get an abortion...
I guess after he and Amanda released The Problem a couple of years ago, and the fact that most mainstream artists may drop a line or two about it here and there but not a whole song, just wasn't expecting it.

Too bad he and Shires did not have their bodies shredded by the Hoover while in the womb like the ones they so bravely sing about.

I was at the album release show last Friday. If you like Isbell, don't miss the concert. Not ready to rank Weathervanes yet, but it's up there with his best. When We Were Close is awesome live.

Honestly amazed that’s what you got out of those lyrics but ok!

While southeastern is held up as perfection on this board, I think this is honestly a better cohesive ALBUM. Southeastern has timeless classic songs of the genre but man this album has it all. Loud, soft, story telling, riffs, and some of the most underrated drums I’ve heard recorded. Seriously listen to this record with headphones. You’re missing the good stuff.
