Just finished my first listen on the back porch. It's his best lyrics since Something More Than Free, maybe since Southeastern. The way they tweaked his vocals were a bit hit and miss for me after one listen. I love Death Wish, a great song about addiction from someone who's already covered that ground extensively. But middle of the morning didn't do much for me. I liked the lyrics, music was great, but I don't know that his vocals needed the extra production on that one for him to be his best. Strong themes of addiction/sobriety/relapse, codependency, marital discord, family discord, shame, guilt, fear, racism, social justice, and infedility. He broaches those subjects as few other songwriters can or even dare to. I'd give it a 7/10 on first listen and expect it to climb to 8 or higher soon. You never catch all of his subtle references the first listen.

I’ve listened a few times now, and I just don’t know how I feel about the record. I guess it’s better than Reunions? But Reunions has the benefit of the HBO doc to put it into perspective.
I think Southeastern, Something More Than Free, and even The Nashville Sound are more to *my* taste.
I do get a kick out of the square-toed boot line

If You Insist may be the best Isbell song since Southeastern. Very pleasantly surprised at the record. It's good. In some parts, very good. I have been an Isbell fan since early DBT and he lost me the last few years. Big comeback record.

I listened yesterday, and I think I just don't really like Jason Isbell anymore. Sappy, melodramatic, hyper-nostalgic, post-alchy loathing. The song about mass shootings is just fricking great. Will be perfect to listen to whenever I'm in the mood to listen to a song about mass shootings.
The guy can write a song, there's no doubt it, but his songs just kind of bore me, and make me roll my eyes, and there are a couple on this album that are laughably bad.

I don’t see anything weird or even political about writing a song about mass shootings.
Regardless of politics, it’s pretty well known that there’s a growing issue with school/mass shootings. Not really weird for a songwriting father of a school aged kid to address the concern in a song.
Same with abortion, people get abortions and deal with the heaviness of the situation and the emotional aftermath. Did people complaint about Brick by Ben Folds?
It’s just writers addressing emotionally charged situations.
Now some songs in the past he’s definitely pushing a political idea but this album doesn’t have much of that at all.

I really have no problem with him writing the song and putting it on an album, I have no political opinion of the song, I just don't think I'd ever find myself listening to or enjoying such a song. It's not great song material IMO. But to each their own.

He’s a great artist not taking that away from him. But it’s a political statement about gun control. Is what it is.
He’s a dude struggling with post addiction issues and navigating marriage. He’s trying to stay true to himself and please shires, who seems difficult to say the least.
Either way it’s a good listen. I’ll support him and will be at several shows this run.

There’s no doubt Isbell supports gun control but witting a song about shootings isn’t necessarily pushing any agenda. Just imagine Ted Nugent singing it or something.
Both sides of the political spectrum recognize the problem, they just differ on the solutions.

This record is sticking. Been through it a dozen or so times and it keeps getting better. Anyone trying to make this album a political statement is just grasping for straws here.
There's going to be some amazing moments with these songs live. Will Johnson is going on tour with Isbell and should add some nice fills.

Fair question.
Just an assessment from afar.
I’m sure there is more to it than what I see but she seems a bit high maintenance.

It’s really not if you listen to the actual lyrics. Just going through the emotions of living in a world where they happen.

I've read a few really good article/interviews in the wake of this release, but this one by Jefferson Cowie is tremendous.
