When they put out Holy Roller Novocaine they said Jared couldn't even play the bass yet. They played their songs faster since they weren't as good on the guitars yet. They really are an amazing story.

I've heard this as well. Part of the reason that they sounded so gritty on their first album was simply because they weren't that good at playing their instruments.

If you think about it, each one of their albums had a more polished sound than the one preceding it. People give Only By The Night a really hard time, but I would actually argue that the difference between Because of the Times and A Ha Shake is greater than the difference between Because of the Times and Only By the Night.

Could it have been -- with the exception of Sex on Fire, which really was just an obvious attempt to get on the radio...and a KOL song I'm not willing to defend -- that KOL's transformation was more evolutionary than revolutionary? That the sound got cleaner simply because they got better?

Food for thought.

The live video of them playing trani at bonnaroo is incredible.

That video is amazing. I think Caleb actually starts crying as he's singing the song.

I think the best live version of Trani -- the one that sounds the best -- is the I posted a couple pages back. JMO. But I love that version.

Well according to VOR we don't need this board or music journalism. Criticism is not legitimate. A band can do whatever it wants to do without any repercussions or backlash from their fans. I can't hear you because you're on your high horse. They sell records so they must be doing something right...give me a break. That way of thinking is why so many bands cop out and lose who they were and why they started making music.

I see both sides. People generally tend to be way too quick and too frequent with the "sell out" accusation. It annoys me as well.

At the same time I can't condone the Black Eyed Peas being an underground hip hop group that was fricking awesome; adding Fergie; and then coming out as a straight pop act.

I'm not necessarily sure KOL deserves the label. If I pretend sex on fire never happened, then they're still making music that I like, even if it sounds different than it did in 2004.

Them becoming "better at their instruments" has zip to do with writing generic fluff pop Arena rock...

I saw it as a deliberate effort to sell more records. Changing the producer/sound engineer was also included into the mix.

I mean, they had songs like Molly's chambers and kick the bucket on commercials long before sex on fire and were still successful..

That's really my point. I don't suggest that it never happens.

I feel pretty much the same way. And I even think Sex on Fire gets a bad rap. If the words bother you, well whatever. But the rhythm and arrangement is sort of interesting, really.

Most hate on both "use somebody" and "sex on fire". I'm okay with use somebody, but sex on fire -- and it isn't the words; i'm not a big lyrics guy -- just doesn't do it for me. It isn't a song that I would put on a playlist.

I will even admit both of those are "pop" song. But so what? That alone doesn't make them bad. Now certainly, as a personal preference, someone may not like them as songs on their own merits and that's fair enough.

I'm really not talking so much about KOL as I am about the concept of "selling out"

Well some people make music because they want to creat the best possible songs, instead of sell the most copies. When you have to write an album because you have a tour coming up, that's pop music. That's what KOL are. That's what selling out is. I still love them, but it just sucks. Move on.

the '04 video is what turned me onto them. When I was at Bonnaroo in '10, KOL returned and Caleb was looking back and thanking everyone and talking about being on the big stage and he cried again.

I was there. That was a great performance. It caught me completely off guard when they played "Where is my Mind", and I loved every second of it. They do that song really really well. And I distinctly remember what you're talking about. He was saying how they grew up in Tennessee just up the highway from Bonnaroo and when they started out they were at the small tent, and how being able to play the main tent at Bonnaroo was something that he was really proud of. You could tell he wasn't bullshitting. He was getting emotional. That was a great set.

1. Is this a statement of fact or are you speculating about both an upcoming album and an upcoming tour?

2. Bands have to put out records from time to time. Contractual obligations and such.

Aside: why is it that when Ryan Adams puts out a new album every three weeks that sounds no better than a 74 minute recording of me doing armpit farts, and yet every music critic and their cousin continues to fellate that guy with a fervor that would make you think his jizz was the elixir of youth. I think he might have a picture of somebody very influential in a hotel room with a goat. Best explanation I got.

I don't think they have a tour coming up. I just saw where they announced a date, maybe a coming back show. They need to make themselves look good again after ditching the last tour. Come Around Sundown came out in 2010 so they should be working on a new record. It wouldn't come out til sometime in 2013 im guessing.

Yeah I went nuts when they played the Pixies and when they played Milk.

Maybe they have turned pop. I don't know. Truth is, a lot of people wouldn't have heard any of their older stuff had it not been for songs like "Sex on Fire." And that would've been a shame.

Didn't they open for U2 or Pearl Jam on.an arena tour for Because of the Times? I remember them saying they watched the headliner and learned a great deal about the direction they wanted to go

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2010

i'm a fan of KoL. i like their first 2 records. Because of the Times is my favorite record from them. 4th was okay. haven't heard their 5th.

every band evolves.

i'm sure there is another 20 "blogs" on the interwebs talking about the exact same thing about the same exact band..
