so i'm a fogelberg fan, but i'm going to speak truth to power here.

quote:

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

so this poor woman is out trying to grab last minute groceries for her family and creepy stalky fogelberg (he made this song about himself, not me) is lonely, depressed and has nothing better to do while not on stage and is hanging out in a grocery store ON CHRISTMAS EVE hoping someone will recognize him and want to spend the night with him. NO DOUBT IN MY MIND this is what is going on. what possible reason does he have for being there?

quote:

She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wid
She went to hug me, and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried

you CRIED...you CRIED?? wtf, dan. its someone you had sex with 20 years ago, not someone in your family that just died.

you know WHY she spilled her purse? because you freaking snuck up behind her and groped her arm and made her uncomfortable and she felt like she needed to hug you because..AWKWARD.

quote:

We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged

"WE" took her groceries to the checkout stand. WE. i bet she was making eyes at the cashier like 'help me'.

quote:

Went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car

My lord. Your seriously just followed this poor woman to her car and tried to get her drunk?

quote:

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how
She said she'd married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would've liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie

wait wut? so because she is trying to get rid of you and isn't over-sharing you're making up stories about her in your mind? did she share if she had any kids? or you just assuming here? did you actually ASK HER if she loved her husband? so awkward.

quote:

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes, I wasn't sure if I
Saw doubt or gratitude

let me help you out, its PITY

is this your A-game Dan?

quote:

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said, "The audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell"

SO SHE DID KNOW WHO YOU WERE! She was just hoping you wouldn't notice her and you came up and groped her arm so she had to act surprised. And Dan, we get it. you have groupies. not your best look bragging about how you could have anyone you wanted while you're walking around a grocery store by yourself on christmas eve and hitting on exes.

quote:

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how
We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another auld lang syne
The beer was empty, and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say

so uncomfortable. sounds like she's saying a bunch of nothing trying to get you out of her car.

quote:

She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away

fx her: JESUS CHRIST, so glad to get away from him.

quote:

Just for a moment, I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain

Crying again? LMAO. "old familiar pain"? AHA she dumped *YOUR* arse before. thats what this is about. YOU CANT HANDLE BEING REJECTED TWICE so you had to write a song about it and try to throw shade at her man by making it sound like she doesn't love him.

1. It is based on a true story.

B. With all the Christmas songs in the world, this is a rare one appropriate for NYE (although, technically, it is a Christmas song, but that Auld Lang Syne language is clearly New Year related), so don't try to mess up a good time.

III. Again, refer back to 1., but have you ever heard of "poetic license"? Well, Dan's wasn't revoked or suspended at the time, my guy.

(ETA: You should pick Zeppelin's Ten Years Gone, next. Or, even better, Vehicle by Ides of March.)

It's a classic and your're a cynic. But still an interesting take.

He sure left us too soon.

A radio station near where I'm from used to play it late at night at Christmas so it always reminds me of that time.

Very nostalgic.
