Definitely in my top 5 country artist of all time. Was my old mans favorite musician of any genre. He and James Brown.
RIP Mighty Merle. One of my favorite tunes that doesn't get a lot of air time, even in Haggard circles.

His hat can now hang on the same nail for a long time.

Hard to pick a favorite song but my Top 5:

Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink
That's the way love goes

Real shame to see him pass. Guy did a killer collab album with Willie last year, real sad that he sounded like he had a good bit left in him.
Man was a damn fine songwriter, could play the hell out of someone else's song just as well though. Some favorites of both;
Ramblin' Fever
San Antonio Rose
Misery and Gin
Seashores of Old Mexico
Reasons to Quit (with Willie)
RIP Haggard, you will be dearly missed.

Cheers
Love seeing those two great singers together. I imagine how fun and interesting it would have been to hang out with them.
Two great voices singing great songs that have depth and meaningfulness yet are delivered with a simple grace. Poetry in song and storytelling.

Yep. Most of the guys out there right now couldn't carry Hag's guitar strap. Stapleton is good and there are a few others but these guys don't have a clue.

Agreed. I think Sturgill Simpson is the closest thing we have to Merle today but there will only ever be one Merle Haggard.

Here is one of my favorite Merle songs which is vastly under rated. It was co-written by Country Music Hall of Fame Little Jimmy Dickens.
