A prince and a great man has fallen. I can't ever remember not hearing Merle Haggard. He was a big favorite of my parents, and even when I turned away from country for a while, I still knew Merle Haggard was the real deal.

Any country band in America that doesn't play a few Haggard tunes in tribute tonight should turn in their cowboy boots.

And wherever you are tonight, Merle, kick out those damn footlights.

I'm not a country music fan, but RIP, Merle.

RIP Merle.

"My Kind Of Hat"

Cowboys and outlaws, right guys and southpaws
And good dogs and all kinds of cats
Dirt roads and white lines and all kinds of stop signs
I stand right here where I'm at
'Cause I wear my own kind of hat

There's two kind of lovers and two kind of brothers
And two kind of babies to hold
There's two kind of cherries and two kind of fairies
And two kind of mothers I'm told, I'm told

Hey but cowboys and outlaws, right guys and southpaws
Good dogs and all kinds of cats
Dirt roads and white lines and all kinds of stop signs
But I stand right here where I'm at
'Cause I wear my own kind of hat

There's two kind of brothers and two kind of lovers
And two kind of babies to hold
There's two kind of cherries and two kind of fairies
And two kind of mothers I'm told, I'm told

Saw him on March 27, 2015 with Willie at White Water Amphitheater. His health looked pretty bad then and to my understanding he has been battling pneumonia for a long time now. He sounded fantastic though.

Glad I got to see him before he went, it was a memory I'll never forget.

Saw him at Tramps in NYC of all places back in 1997. Boy, will he be missed.

Mama Tried- greatest chorus of all time

Pancho and Lefty (with Willie) - one of the alltime great late-song entries by a singer

Bakersfields's best...RIP

quote:

A canvas covered cabin in a crowded labour camp
Stand out in this memory I revived;
Cause my daddy raised a family there, with two hard working hands
And tried to feed my mama's hungry eyes.

He dreamed of something better, and my mama's faith was strong
And us kids were just too young to realize
That another class of people put us somewhere just below;
One more reason for my mama's hungry eyes.

Mama never had the luxuries she wanted
But it wasn't cause my daddy didn't try.
She only wanted things she really needed;
One more reason for my mama's hungry eyes.

I remember daddy praying for a better way of life
But I don't recall a change of any size;
Just a little loss of courage, as their age began to show
And more sadness in my mama's hungry eyes.

Mama never had the luxuries she wanted
But it wasn't cause my daddy didn't try.
She only wanted things she really needed;
One more reason for my mama's hungry eyes.

Oh, I still recall my mama's hungry eyes.

I was just telling my girl last weekend that we had to go to his show in June at Iron City in Bham to make sure we had a chance to see him before he died...

Wish I was down on some blue bayou,
With a bamboo cane stuck in the sand.
But the road I'm on, don't seem to go there,
So I just dream, keep on bein' the way I am.
Wish I enjoyed what makes my living,
Did what I do with a willin' hand.
Some would run, ah, but that ain't like me.
So I just dream and keep on bein' the way I am.
The way I am, don't fit my shackles.
The way I am, reality.
I can almost see that bobber dancin',
So I just dream, keep on bein' the way I am.
The way I am, don't fit my shackles.
The way I am, reality.
I can almost see that bobber dancin',
So I just dream, keep on bein' the way I am.
I just dream, keep on bein' the way I am.

I'm in. I just made it through the 10th of the 19 records of his that I have. I still have 291 songs on my iPod to drink through too.

Hit after hit after hit. Hearing songs that I forgot about completely.
