I didn't say they dominated, singer songwriters mostly did, but they did get played. My mom was a DJ at a top 40 station back in the day and can attest to this.

It immediately turned on a dime when Alan Jackson's "Cornbread and Chicken" came out. I knew country had been on life support but that was the day they pulled the cord permanently.
