I like Morrisseys lyrics but I agree with you. Also agree with Rex for once, Don Henley is a fricking hack and has always been a hack. He sucks.

Best and most intelligent lyricist? Paul Simon.

He's up there for sure.

Suzanne Vega is a dickhead

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry
After that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am [X3]

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

And they only hit until you cry
After that, you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

well, the singer of the song,is just telling what another person( The Captain) said.

Is a songwriter responsible for everybody in their songs, using a proper vocabulary?

Bono and he could also be labeled as most pretentious and this is coming from a U2 fan.

This. I'm a U2 fan too. That scene in Rattle and Hum where he is reading his lyrics to BB King is pretentious as frick.

Yeah, D Henley and Van the Man are big for me. Also think Fagen and Becker were oddball geniuses in their own right.

I'm just butthurt that Rex started this thread and I know he likes Steely Dan. Fagen said a hobo told him that was the worst lyric in all of music.

And while U2/Bono may be bad, these U2 wannabes are the worst. If this isn't douchebag music, I don't know what is.

quote:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know St Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Oh oh oh oh ohh oh [x5]

Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know St Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

It's a funny thing about song lyrics and "pretentiousness". I think it's immediately a pretentious act to even do it in the first place so there's always a small element there across the board. It's kind of like complaining that a painting has too much paint on it.

And the first thing that jumps out to me is that it always comes across as just a little bit arrogant when somebody presumes to be the authority on establishing what is and is not an acceptable amount of pretentiousness in either poetry or lyrics.

It's ALL pretentious. The fine line is that when it works, it's transcendent and beautiful and when it fails it stinks like a pot of rotten cabbage. But there's a lot of stuff that falls in between and making a false charge reveals more about the accuser than the lyricist.

Roger Waters or Bono.

I'd give Bone the edge, but barely.
