Brian Wilson's spiral was swirling before that. He basically had to be coaxed onto a plane for a show in Houston in 1964.....and the proceeded to have what can only be termed as a breakdown on the plane. After that he had fill ins on stage like Glen Campbell.

Prior to Pet Sounds and really Sgt Pepper's ny the Beatles, albums were merely a collection of songs that the record companies would clump together in hopes that 2 or 3 would break out.
Interesting you say this because Brian said Rubber Soul (which was Dylan inspired) sounded like a complete collection of songs as opposed to singles and filler. And before I (in my early 20's) knew of his quote and what inspired what, I bought an used copy of Rubber Soul and had the same thought.
It wasn't a concept album, but an album where all of the songs were an impressive collective unit.

Yea, it's hard to say any Beatle album prior to Sgt Pepper was a true concept album, but you can say that they were the only group to put out excellent albums from front to back.
Even when looking at their early stuff, you may have one or two sub par songs on any one of them, but all of their albums (sans Yellow Submarine) were excellent all the way through.
