I hear ya. To me it's kinda like going to a college football game vs watching one on TV. Sure you can tell what is going on, but it is just a completely different experience being there. Everyone is different tho. I had never heard a single song from either Phish or Panic before I saw them live and wouldn't trade that for anything. Going in without any expectations was great IMO. I didn't really "get" umphreys mcgee until I saw them live and now I am a big fan.
