This is weak. You don't have to live in a certain neighborhood to recognize good or bad music.
That is a fact. The early '90's Seattle "scene" was mostly played out downtown/Belltown and in the Cap Hill area, however. I moved up here in '92 and caught the last few gasps. The only Seattle bands I heard on the radio in BR was PJ, AIC, and Nirvana. Just saying...

How many bands are still out there trying to cash in on the novelty of "Grunge"?
Are there still bands in flannel and Doc Martins?

I'm going with
AIC
PJ
Soundgarden
Nirvana.
Probably have more Soundgarden on my iPhone though.

I'm not real current with what's going on downtown these days. I'm way out in east king county and don't venture into the city to see unknown bands anymore.

Suprised Sleater Kinney hasn't been mentioned. Oly's music scene at one time was big.
I love Sleater-Kinney. One of my all-time favorite bands, but they really weren't part of the Seattle scene. The whole riot grrrl thing is related to the grunge thing, but it's not quite what people are talking about when they talk about "Seattle bands". Not that S-K is all that riot grrrl. they are just simply awesome. Heck, I like Heavens to Betsy as well (not that Seattle didn't have its own riot grrrl bands -- 7 Year Bitch was pretty great).

PJ would be my favorite but it's hard to choose because none of those bands sound the same. It's all about musical taste between those bands. One of my favorite "Seattle bands" was Screaming Trees.

-AiC
-Pearl Jam

...Nirvana really didn't do anything for me back then, probably worth going through their catalog again to see if it resonates better with me now.

1. Pearl Jam - this group made the most albums, had the longest duration and is still making great music after 20+ years doing it.
2. Alice in Chains
3. Soundgarden
4. Nirvana - They only had about 3 albums worth of material full of mediocre guitar work and mostly teen angst lyrics. Smells Like Teen Spirit and Nevermind had an undeniable impact on music going forward and I absolutely love Kurt's voice, but they are the most overrated band of all time IMO.

How ironic is it that the Saints are playing in a huge game against Seattle this weekend?
Jazz and funk vs. Grunge

Also, I am surprised about the lack of Temple of the Dog. I know their output is minuscule but "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and "Hunger Strike" are two of the very best songs from that era.

Without question. Plus, Vedder+Cornell is impossible to top. Has there ever been another rock vocals duo as badass as Vedder and Cornell? i doubt it
