IMO
1-Pantera - smaller catalog size but for me packed more of an explosive punch and pretty much created groove metal. Plus Phil still kills it.

2-Slayer - Just for Seasons in the Abyss alone they are the complete metal machines combining brutality with speed.

3-Metallica - Obviously the most commercial success. Ride, Puppets are masterpieces but clearly the last couple of albums all blend in.

4-Megadeath - Handful of decent songs but Dave is too full of himself.

Metallica
Slayer
Megadeth
Pantera (great band, but Phil is just such a large-diameter dickhole)

Not anymore full of himself than Lars, probably even less.

Anyway, depending on my mood anyone of these four could be in any order so there's no clear cut rating for me. All clearly next level to their other competition.

3. Pantera

X. Anthrax/Slayer/Exodus/Overkill/etc.

The "Big 4" (of thrash) is a myth. Slayer and Anthrax had no business being there.

Metallica was the most important

Pantera was the most real

Megadeth was the most bitter

Slayer was the most influential

Metallica
Pantera
Slayer
Megadeth

Metallica is the biggest band in metal history by any objective measure and its not even close. I do enjoy all these bands but Megadeth had a long stretch of putting out nothing but bland garbage so they come in last for me.

I never liked Mustaine that much but when I watched his interview with Rogan I saw a totally different side of him. He is actually like able and pretty interesting dude.

1) Metallica - Their run from 1983 - 1991 (yes, including the Black album) is up there with the Beatles and Led Zeppelin in terms of quality, success, and influence. Absolute juggernauts in music history and badass too. I don’t fault the Load/Reload era as they tried to be creative and branch into different avenues of hard rock. They still killed it on tour and Garage Inc + S&M were great releases. I want to drop them considering just how bad they were from 2002ish to 2015ish. Hardwired was a great album though.

2) Slayer - Who embodies the gates of hell better than Slayer? If someone says thrash metal, the only suitable response is Slayer. A big criticism I have of them is that they don’t have the range of Metallica or Pantera. Slayer is thrash metal - fast, hard, intense - and that’s it.

3) Pantera - Certainly legends in their own right, I just get bored with some of their tracks. I do love how dynamic their songwriting is though. Cemetery Gates to Walk to Floods to Cowboys from Hell - no one can criticize Pantera for being too “one note.”

4) Megadeth - I agree: a few good songs, not much else. They had great artwork on their albums and probably the coolest band name for a “skull and cemetery” genre of music. I rarely if ever get in the mood to listen to a Megadeth album.

1 - Metallica: In their prime, mixed melody, heaviness, speed and atmosphere like no other.

2 - Slayer: Great career, super heavy, inventive songs, mixed hardcore and thrash as well as any

3 - Pantera: Two of the best metal albums ever, great live performers. Fell off a cliff after Far Beyond Driven, but still quite a legacy,

4 - Megadeth: Early stuff was great, later stuff lame. Very boring live.

I never knew Slayer and discovered their catalog over COVID and was instantly hooked. They are amazing musicians and people don’t realize how influential they were.

I’ve tried a ton of times but just can’t get into megadeath. Great riffs but Dave’s voice is nails on a chalkboard.

I’d go

Metallica
Slayer
Pantera

Megadeath

Metallica takes the top slot, easily.

Megadeth is a somewhat distant second.

I dabbled in Panters and Slayer in my younger days, but can’t imagine listening to them even briefly, now. Too extreme for this forty-something’s ears.
