One of my all time favorite vocalists and lyricists. The man was one of a kind and it is a tragedy he was only here a short while. Soup was such an incredible album, and you could really hear the band start to develop it's own unique sound. I wish we could all hear the music he would have helped create had he lived longer.

You sure
Probably just that one song only
The band was from West Point/Columbus. Yeah, it was a popular band.

Just kidding, just ragging on Starkville
I thought those guys were from Louisiana. Didn’t realize it was Mississippi. Kinda cool
You probably were behind me

Listening to the song now and watching the video fills me with joyful nostalgia. I love it!!
“And I don't understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape”
For the record, that song was written by Brad Smith. His Abandon Jalopy albums were really good.
I still don't know how he fell out with the other members of the band. It seems like him, Glenn, and Rogers were the glue, but Brad also owned a studio with Christopher at one point.

Did they actually have a falling out? For some reason I thought he just didn’t want to do the touring thing anymore.
Also, didn’t Brad and Nico (Hoon’s daughter) have some songs together recently?

Yeah the band was sick of it too and played the ripped away version live.

It’s a superior version to the original. Much darker and really resonates the self-loathing and inability to change.

Yeah, I love the way it opens and shannon just trails in ‘all i can say….’

Yea baw, you can tell he was feeling it on a much deeper level.
Got a soft spot in my heart for Blind Melon from my days working at the Varsity in BR. If you ever saw any shows at the Varsity back in the day, you would have noticed some framed Rolling Stones covers with them on it, plus some gold and platinum records in the frames.
Back in the day, before they hit it big, BM used to play a good many shows at the Varsity. They were scheduled to play a show, but then they busted out nationally big time and were filling much larger venues. However, they honored their already-booked show at the V-Theatre and played their asses off, and gifted the club with those framed records for giving them a shot when they were really trying to establish themselves.
Very cool in my book. RIP Shannon Hoon.
ETA: they played there before my time, but some of my co-workers had worked there when Blind Melon would play and had nothing but good things to say.

No, there was some sort of falling out. I know Brad still wanted to be part of the band, but he has always been vague about the issue.

I remember the first time I saw him was in GNR’s Don’t Cry video. I was like who’s that weirdo singing with Axel?
Hoon was one of the perfect personifications of grunge, albeit more on the happy positive than gloomy side.

Watching the Don’t Cry video just now I gasped when I saw him, completely dumbfounded. Either I never knew this or just don’t remember.
But either way that song is so freaking good!!
DON’T CRY
And the video was perfect

Soup is one of the greatest albums of all time and I’m willing to die on that hill.

I spin that bad boy at least once a month. My kiddos will often ask that I play it a good bit too. That album was way ahead of its time and will always hold up.
