I probably should have specified, you're right, but from the way this thread is going, it's safe to assume that the majority of posters here took the topic for Rock guitarists.

No one has made more great music in more styles while avoiding being yet another boring blues-based guitarist over a 40+ year career than Steve Howe.

In no particular order:
1. John Petrucci - Dream Theater
2. Michael Romeo - Symphony X
3. Randy Rhoads - Ozzy
4. Kirk Hammett - Metallica
5. Jimmy Hendrix
Honorable Mention:
Zakk Wylde - Black Label Society
Dimebag Darrell - Pantera
Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin
Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath
It's difficult to really state who the top 5 guitarists are though. While the guitarists for Dream Theater and Symphony X can run circles around guitarists like Tony Iommi/Page/Hendrix etc. you probably would have never had Dream Theater or Symphony X without the ground breaking influence and sound of Sabbath/Hendrix/Zeppilin etc.
One is better off stating who the top 5 guitarists are of each sub-genere for a set period of time ie who was the best for the 60's/70's/80's/90's etc.

Although SRV was exceptionally skilled, I find most of his catalog is very narrow, with the same tune. However, he does deserve more respect on this thread.
FYI, I agree with your top 5 list, with the exception of berry. I would have Duane Allman in there instead. I have read that chuck didn't deserve a lot of the writing credits attributed to him. Which in my mind should be a factor when discussing great guitarists.

I was reading them all to see if he got mentioned. Maybe it's from growing up in Austin, I don't know, but he's me favorite.
Some others to add to the list, I don't know if they're top 5 material but maybe 20 years from now they'll be considered:
Joe Satriani
Jack White
Junior Brown - this dude because of the "guit-steel" - a custom made twin necked electric and steel guitar hybrid. He's a monster when he plays.
