That's another good choice
When I think of hipster bands of today, I think of bands who aren't very talented, but who the handlebar moustached, fixed gear bike riding, rolled up jeans and suspenders/tshirt crowd listens to because they're 'cool' to listen to.
I don't consider Modest Mouse to be a hipster band at all because I genuinely think that they're really really good.

I love Pavement.
I was afraid I was a closet hipster about to be outed.

I wasn't insulting you. Just saying- you list Neutral Milk Hotel and (I think) The Dismemberment Plan as your favorite bands. Maybe Big Star too.
Gotcha. I may have been too thin-skinned there, but that post definitely didn't read complimentary. I do love Neutral Milk Hotel and The Dismemberment Plan and many other bands pitchfork (and countless other music blogs) like. But I definitely don't always agree with pitchfork or like something just because they do.

Nah, man. I'm too old to even worry about what a hipster is. Do I still try to keep up with and listen to what I consider good music? Absolutely.

Pitchfork sends me in the right direction to find out some new good music
But my god some of it is the most pretentious dribble on the entire fricking internet

You disagree with that statement? That's cool, but because you don't like a band does not make them a hipster band.

This thread is magic with false tales of machismo and bravado. I hope I don't get beat up in my hipster emo angst.

I love modest mouse. One of my favorite bands, but they definitely helped start the "indie" movement back in the 90s which makes them a mainstream hipster band. That's just my opinion, take it fwiw

I am about to shotgun some PBR and blare some Television Marquee Moon by my pool. I am such a hipster-frick.

Clearly not with a closet full of khaki shorts that smell like off-brand fabric softener...

I pretty much agree with that. I really even read their reviews these, but they have introduced me to a ton of great bands/albums through their old lists, so I would say they have had a net positive influence on my life.

Why do you hate on Dockers so much? Sorry I represent The Bay, yo.

Aight, maybe my perception of what defines a hipster band is off.
I picture banjos, acoustics, douche lyrics, face paint, trendiness and more of a desire to be different and unique than to make legit music.
If MM got the "indie" movement started and that led to modern day hipsters, I can kinda see it.
There certainly was a period when Spin, Pitchfork, etc fawned all over MM like nobody's business, but in hindsight I think it was warranted.
Of Monsters and Men, The Lumineers, etc - not warranted IMHO.

If Pitchfork gives something a BNM these days, I'm much more likely to think it's pretentious bullshite than to actually like it. I have found some great stuff through Pitchfork, though. Most of it was in the last decade.

Gang of Four is better pool music IMO

I was joking about Television. It is funk time over here.
