People that try to hard listen too:

Interpol
Muse
Modest Mouse

These bands aren't favorites of mine, but I don't consider them try-hard at all.

That's very disappointing considering you have the word Zappa in your username

Reading this thread it seems most people are not that musical........which pretty much sums up the music board. Who is the greatest drummer to pick his arse while picking the arse of the best bass player to play an 8 string bass?

I pretty much agree with that. I really even read their reviews these, but they have introduced me to a ton of great bands/albums through their old lists, so I would say they have had a net positive influence on my life.

Sometimes I get angry when i read their reviews. I feel like they're trolling me. Like the author actually went out of his way to call the worst songs the best songs and vice versa.

One of the best shows I've seen lately. And I'm an old geezer.

I wouldn't like them live even if they were good live. Just not my sound.

Really? That's awesome because sonic youth is one of the great American bands, again, I am way too old to be a hipster. But I do find they are tapping in to quality way more than ten average youth. They seem to be driving the walkable/ bicycling movement. They seem to be driving the local food movement. Why are you people so lame?

Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm actually not that well-versed in Sonic Youth. But I had them along with Pixies in my head as sort of the original hipster bands in that they were bands that never became mainstream. And what do hipsters love more than a band that never goes mainstream?

I think you're kindof right. I didn't think about those two. They helped to start the indie movement in the midst of all the kurtcobain grunge bullshite that was going on.

Jeeze Christ.......thank you.......nirvana was early 90s.....sonic youth...early 80s......pixies mid 80s.......I grew up in the 80s....pixies were good but no one gushed over them like now. There were so many great bands back then........ok.......I'm old........Gun Club......best band of the 80s.....oh...hyperbole.....but they were great. That's what I mean......so many bands doing different things.....

Never understood the hate for Nirvana. Didn't think they were as great as some, but they had some good stuff out there.

The main thing that I really hate about the grunge movement is Soundgarden/Audioslave. They ruined it for me

I feel like the term "hipster" is being used in a way that it should be. For me, and my friends from Austin and Houston, the term "hipster" is used to describe the clothing and lifestyle certain people choose; most of the bands listed are just some offshoot of "indie."

IMHO there are no hipster bands, just hipster people who listen to specific music.

I liked Soundgarden. I always thought it weird that all those Seattle groups were lumped into one genre, when they were in fact very different. Soundgarden actually formed in the mid 80's.
