then you don't really know what you're listening to from a technical stand point.

quote:

I don't think great anything when i think of FF. They are mediocre.

the songs or the drumming? I don't care for a lot of the newer FF songs over the years but those first two albums had some great drum tracks on them. Aside from FF, Dave has drummed for:

quote:

Tom Petty
QOTSA
NIN
them crooked vultures
King Buzzo
Mike Watt
Eddie Vedder
Probot
Killing Joke
Garbage
Pete Yorn
avid Bowie
The Prodigy
Tenacious D
Slash
Cage the Elephant
Paul McCartney
Zac Brown Band
Ghost
Alice Cooper
Grohl performed in an ad hoc supergroup with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Steven Van Zandt for a performance in tribute of then-recently deceased singer/guitarist Joe Strummer.

people can hate on grohl all they want, but he's obviously a talented drummer if all of these artists have had him play drums for them at some point either live or recordings.

Name a list that doesn't exist because it wouldn't get any hits? Grohl is a celebrity drummer that gets points for being in big bands, writing music, and being famous. Doesn't mean he is a great drummer. If you love FF good for you. I just think they are kind of boring.

What allows the greats to be great then? It's it their range of style? Their technique? Their originality?

I think people tend to judge drummers on their technical chops more than what they add to a band. Grohl's drum parts are great modern rock drums. Would he be able to play with Dream Theater? Probably not. Would he fall asleep playing Beatles' tunes? Probably so.

I think the hate for him comes from how famous he has become. I judge musicians on their live performances. Foo Fighters put on a great show. Same for Nickelback. You may hate their music but you can't deny that the performance of those songs are pretty good.

ETA: I realize that he doesn't play drums for FF but his style is prevalent in the writing. He also plays guitar like a drummer which I relate to.

I would say it's how he maximizes the straight forward method. Cobain always said he was like metronome too.

He definitely has speed chops - look at Everlong. I'm not sure any fancier drummer could have made it any better than it was.

And, really, look at Teen Spirit. Have you ever seen cover bands play this song? They NEVER actually play the drums true to the original recording. It's not like it's crazy complex, but it is active and tiring and he keeps with the damned thing.

Not necessarily. He actually played all of the instruments on the first Foo Fighters album. He writes most of their drum parts, and still does record some of them. He relies on Taylor Hawkins to perform most everything live.

I think this articulated it well for me. I have always loved the drumming on Nevermind-this sums that up nicely

he hits the frick out of the drums and is creative with it.

he's got one of the most memorable drum intros to any song ever written with smells like teen spirit. it's up there with in the air tonight for a signature drum part.

everyone knows whose drumming when he kicks off that part in the intro. it's definitive dave grohl.

Yes. It's not masturbatory like the Tool guy everyone on here blows all the time, but it's hard and creative, despite its overall accessibility.

I get it, a lot of people love the foo fighters. They are just a decent radio band IMO, kind of like Pearl Jam. The wierd thing is the Christian rock musicians I know that play at the mega churches love both those bands.

I've always thought Foo Fighters were popular in part because they were the last man standing from the movement, rather than by virtue of any real excellence. If some of their peers had made it this long, I feel like they (FF) would be overshadowed. I agree on Pearl Jam.

Which is fine, longevity isn't without value.

Go listen to his drumming on QOTSA’s album Songs for the Deaf. He’s an incredible drummer.

I'm not really a fan of Nirvana or Foo Fighters, but the guy is a really good drummer. You also forgot to include his work on Them Crooked Vultures.

No, he isn't a jazz virtuoso, and he kind of eschews complex fills, but there is a reason why bands like QOTSA seek him out.

That's platitudes. He's a really solid drummer, but not even in the top 10 in the world.

He may not be the BEST drummer in the world, but I like his drumming style more than any other drummer besides Joey Jordison (RIP)

Grohl is a really good drummer. He mixes energy with creativity. I like his style. But Danny Carey, jimmy chamberlin, Eric Kretz are better drummers and that’s just 3 from early 90s bands off the top of my head.

That reminds me of the time I heard Grohl on the Howard Stern show about 10-12 years ago. He was going on and on about how he jammed with Prince at an empty Forum in LA during a soundcheck.

Howard says: "Are you saying Prince is a better musician than you?" Grohl replies: "It ain't even close-Dude, Prince is a better DRUMMER than I am!!"

And that's a legit. He's the hard rock version of Matt Chamberlain. He always seems to know exactly how much a song needs and plays accordingly.
