There’s a bunch, but the first thing that popped into my head was Weezer’s Undone (The Sweater Song). You could pick just about any song off that album though.

That’s a pretty good pick.

I wouldn't call it a "mainstream hit" but Helmet's version of In The Meantime is better...

My favorite.

I don't know about best (I like it), but for sure when it comes to the most played, there is only one answer,

The 90s didn't impress me with new music. In my collection, I only have 1 album (technically, a CD) from that decade:

REM - Automatic for the People

Additionally, I have the following individual songs:

The Breeders - Cannonball
David Gray - Babylon
Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy
Pearl Jam - Even Flow
Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth ...
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train

None of these songs are amazing to me. I won't characterize any of them as best.

My favorite from the era. Just a sublime opening riff and the song perfectly capsulized the spirit of the era. A long gone era now.

We're really talking about 90s alternative high school music for kids born in the 80s here, I don't know that we're including a large body of pop music that is probably bigger than the stuff we're talking about.

But one I didn't see mentioned is Iris which joins Don't Wanna Miss a Thing as probably one of the most massively overplayed radio tracks of the late 90s. Both are good tunes, but if you weren't annoyed by them eventually I'd say you didn't live through 98-99.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" reached #6 on the Billboard Top 100, that's pretty mainstream.

For me, the 90s was the first decade when there was a significant amount of diversity in musical genres that were all mainstream.

My favorite overall decade for music.

Wait until you hear my take on "All Star" by Smash Mouth

I went on a big 90s pop kick this weekend without seeing this thread, randomly enough. In bed yesterday morning I was holding my phone up to my wife, who is 5 months pregnant, belly joking that I wanted to see what the baby liked. After picking a few songs and getting no reaction I got bored let it the playlist shuffle. About 45 seconds into ALLSTAR the baby started having a gd rager, thrashing around until the song ended
