When did country music become bro country?

Why is almost all “country” music these days just shitty pop music sung in a terrible fake southern accent? When did the shift happen from real country to bro country?

We have a poker tournament most weekends either at my house or a friend’s. Last Friday it was at the friend’s, and someone put on some music that was essentially their playlist. After over an hour of straight bro country, a Korn song came on. I said loud enough for both tables to hear, “Hey, there is at least one actual song in this playlist.”

When the record companies figured out how much money they could make off it.

Been a good decade plus since country's been good IMO. Once the calendar reached the 2010s, it's gone downhill from there.
Country isn't my favorite genre of music, but I used to listen to a lot of it. Now I don't cuz a large majority of it sucks.

As soon as people started buying it.
It's up to us to deliver a better product.
Don't just cry about it, do something.
get your tail in gear.

When I think of country I think of like George Strait.

Country music hasn't been good since the 90s.

Some point to Garth, but it really went off the rails with Big & Rich.

One of the best voices of the Nashville sound.

While there’s still bro country out there, I think the sub genre died out in the late 2010s or early ‘20s. Now, much is boyfriend country where every song holds their GF or wife to angelic views and worships her.
