Derek Trucks, although you rarely see his true talents on display because he plays in a band with his wife and doesn't want to overshadow her.

Up until 2014 I would have said Paco de Lucia.

Have you ever heard metal songs played without effects and acoustically? They sound awful and make no sense musically.

Depends on the player.

And not every metal player plays electric exclusive. Tons of time when an acoustic is used and they're still badass.

This. Gary Clark Jr. plays with a lot of feeling. He’s a very tasteful guitarist that knows when not to play. With that said, he’s nothing special as a picker. There’s probably a dozen guitarists tooling away in local bands just around Baton Rouge that are better instrumentalists than him. What Gary has is that he writes great songs, has a great voice, and has some serious stage presence. His guitar playing itself really isn’t anything uncommon.

Very accurate assessment. I get put off by a lot of these "greatest guitarist" threads, most of the truly great guitarist are unknown to the average person, but that is just a result of a system that only promotes those that are also good singer/songwriters.

I think this quality gets underrated sometimes. Being great with an instrument isn't (IMO) just technical proficiency with it.

It's also knowing how and when to use the instrument for what you're trying to do. Knowing restraint is an underrated skill.

Best overall guitarist over all genres is going to be one of the LA or Nashville guys, like Jack Pearson, Brent Mason, Tim Pierce, etc. Gary Clark is a average blues player, in that genre Matt schofield, Josh Smith, Arien Posien, Kirk Fletcher, and several others are at a whole other level, Clark just happened to get the record deal.

This. Jack Pearson is on another level. Saw him here in Nashville a couple weeks ago. I would also add Derek Trucks and Steve Howe

Clark is a good guitar player, but not anything special. Dozens of better players in downtown Nashville on any given night.

Because he played on David Allen Coes x-rated album in 1982. The snowflakes are still offended after 37 years. He can sure tickle those strings pretty well.

makes me like him even more now.

Warren Haynes is a fricking beast on the guitar

edit: that x rated album from DAC.. most people don't know he was dating a black during that album recording and they had a black drummer in the band. It was well known they found the album humorous.

He was amazing when he was in the Allman Brothers, I watch those YouTube videos all the time.

JD Simo is one that should get a mention.

He is outstanding. Saw him open for Gregg Allman at the Ryman a few years ago. Great tone

I'm sure there are tons of amazing guitar players out there that I don't know of or do not listen to their genre.

"Best" does not equal "most talented/technical" - hence there are a myriad of responses here.

Many that have been mentioned are not very good at all in the grand scheme of things; many are incredibly good.

I think the most talented/impressive guitarist out there currently is Tosin Abasi. The man has essentially reinvented the instrument and can do things out there most can't even comprehend with their ears and mind.
