Uhhh, he got old.

You can do all kinds of stretching and eating right, exercising....but the voice can't fight age. So very, very few artists still the sing their songs in the original keys after 60

I saw Van Halen in 1979 when they opened for Black Sabbath. Great musicians, but DLR was always the weakest link in that band. Take away his stage theatrics and he was not good, even then.
