Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle

I'm more of a Vee Vee guy, but I'm glad someone else on the board mentioned them so I didn't have to. The Archers were f'n great.

Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Pavement – Slanted and Enchanted
Fugazi – Repeater
Nirvana – Nevermind
Dismemberment Plan – Emergency and I
Modest Mouse – Moon and Antarctica
Archers of Loaf – Vee Vee
Liz Phair – Exile in Guyville
Alkaline Trio – Goddamnit!
Weezer - Pinkerton

Incredible album, might be the best of the 90's behind O.K. Computer

yeah, that is a great record... I tried to limit it to one per artist...

Hell... the EP Vs. The Greatest of All Time is up there too

And I just realized I left off Spoon's A Series of Sneaks... criminal...

Radiohead - The Bends (OK Computer was so much more than "alternative")

I like OK Computer...but personally I'll take the Bends all day every day. The Bends, High & Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Black Star, Just, Street Spirit....so many good songs on that album.

ETA: I understand I am in the minority here

I agree, if we are talking pure "alternative" music, the Bends fits into that category much more easily than O.K. Computer.

Nation's Airports is when they start to get weird... in a good way, but it's a bad starting point. You almost need to listen to the other albums first to see how they worked up to it.

Though, in Icky Mettle's corner, you have Web In Front and then the unimpeachable sequence of Fat -- Plumb Line -- Learo, You're a Hole. In Vee Vee's defense, I present Underdogs of Nipomo and Harnessed in Slums, their two best songs. Well, IMO anyway. I love that they forgot how they mistuned their guitars on Nipomo and have never been able to recreate the riff quite right ever again.

I saw them a couple of years ago in Chicago... it was awesome hearing a bunch of late 30s/early 40s people singing out loud to...

They caught and drowned the front man/Of the world's worst rock and roll band/He was out of luck/Because nobody gave a frick/The jury gathered all around the aqueduct/Drinking and laughing and lighting up/Reminiscing just how bad he sucked/Singin' throw him in the river/Throw him in the river/Throw him in the river/Throw the bastard in the river!

I could have put any of their four on the list... I still dont know which one is my favorite, I just went with their first one to make it easy on myself...

I wasn't sure if I was going to put any alt country on my list, but couldn't leave out those two... prob can do a list just on this... the 90s really were the golden age of this genre IMO...
