Was he playing well?

One of the podcasts was talking about JV this week and classified him as someone that is a floor raiser but also a ceiling limiter. Zion is basically the opposite. His injuries lower the floor, but if he’s healthy the sky is the limit
Such a great breakdown of both dudes

What’s the alternative?

It's a real tough call. If they trade him to a competent franchise they might get him in shape and he could become a perennial all star. If the Pelicans keep tip toeing around his size issue, he'll show flashes of greatness and get hurt every year.

Personally I would have the Pelicans management ride his arse onto a diet that got him down to 255 max before next season and hire every specialized coach under the sun to help him develop his game at that size while forcing him to commit to a rigorous stretching and recovery routine. If Zion isn't willing to commit to that, then he doesn't give a single shite.

I don't think he's a bad person, I think he just doesn't realize what's holding him back.

I guess you just want to forget a few very important things. I'll remind you

Zion broke his foot, got out of shape, went to Nike for rehab and lost 50 lbs. He hired a good trainer to do so.

He has shown commitment. Could he lose 10-20 more lbs from his during season weight? Sure. Hamstring injuries happen. Lower leg injuries are what you need to worry about with big men. Z could've not been stretching/staying hydrated and pushed himself to come back too quick.

And I don't care if you're the "same size" as Zion. You aren't an athlete. Your body shape isn't the same. And you can't tell what someone looks like with sweats on. No one can.

The issue isn't people not wanting Zion to be healthy and play all his game.

The issue is that a healthy Zion has the potential to bring NOLA a championship. One season, one play off run, Zion can bring NOLA a title.

No matter how much you don't like his injury history, his conditioning, his weight, whatever, NOLA is not moving on from Zion because we are a small market that only needs lighting in the bottle once to bring a championship.

So you can talk about how he is injury prone and looks to heavy but nobody is getting off Zion unless he asks out and he's not going to ask out unless he is playing and we don't compete. If we get to a point with a healthy Zion and we are not competing then maybe ya'll can talk more about moving on, but until then we will have Zion.

I could be wrong, you could be wrong. I guess the only thing that will tell is how he shows up if he makes it back this season and how he looks going into next, but history is very much not on his side so far.

Dude he hired a trainer and lost 50 lbs in the offseason. You're just being dramatic at this point.

He shows up in shape and dominant every single time after people claim he got sooooo fat while out.

We're gonna fall for it again?

Do you know that there's an internal disagreement on what Zion's weight should be between Zion and the organization?

I'll answer for you, no you don't.

This is a very different take than your threads which essentially start out "Zion is fat and sucks, agree or GFY".

The harshest criticism of this team and it's players this year usually starts off from the wrong place in the sense that fans are judging it by a championship or bust standard. Everyone who sees us falling short of contention is jumping to firing a 2nd year coach and 22 year old player. Zion isn't going to demand a trade this summer, there is still time to make adjustments and get where the Pels need to be.

The team absolutely should push Zion for further commitment to staying healthy. I said before he took a good step this past year moving away from his parents to professionals for training and cooking. He needs to take another step this offseason and the team should be directing it. I don't know what that step is, but that's the progress that we want to hear about in the offseason.

I don't think he needs to be at some specific number or below to stay healthy, but I do think he needs to focus on his health as much as LeBron does and he needs to expand his game so every play isn't bullying his way through a quintuple team.

This is the first thread that's actually evolved into a discussion rather than pure potshots back and forth. But yes, this is always the foundation for why I say this.

I was dead wrong about his skillset translating to the NBA, but I do think that as long as he's heavy he's going to keep running into injury issues and there's some disconnect between him, his circle, and the team on how to get him to a sustainable point in perpetuity.

It just irks me with all the potential and so many people depending on him he still won't just take a few months to get to a sustainable size, or that the team won't press on him to do so.

Just felt like bumping this to revisit everyone's opinions on the matter.

ETA just found out this is anchored. Sad.
