Destroy and semblance of hope left in the fanbase so there’s no uproar when the team eventually moves.

I don’t care what the mechanism is, I just want this team gone so they can succeed again.

The ONLY time you trade an unprotected pick OR a light protected pick in today's game, when you are moving said picks for a player to contend.

Trading it for Queen was a mistake, this team was literally a single player away from being all time worst

If you kill the fanbase it gives them a reason to move/sell the team . Possibly earlier than the lease expires. New city owner would agree to buy it out remaining contract. League can also seize it. Just ask George Shinn.

This is a conspiracy that does not make any sense. The Pelicans lease was set to expire in 2024, but Gayle exercised an option to extend the lease for 5 years so they could finish the Superdome/Saints negotiations first.

If Gayle wanted to move the team, she could have simply let the lease expire in 2024. To my knowledge from one of the attorneys that worked on this, the lease has no exit fee clause. So there is no moving the team earlier than lease expiration without overcoming a demand for specific performance in litigation over breach of the lease.

If Gayle wanted to move the team, she could negotiate with the City for a buyout of the lease, but she would not need the fanbase killed for that as it was already very limited at the end of last season.

The NBA did not seize the Hornets from Shinn. It was a negotiated buyout after his deal with Chouest collapsed. Shinn could not afford to keep running the team and there were no alternative buyers once Chouest peaced out, so the league stepped in to keep the team in New Orleans.
