He's not being unreasonable, you're just being impatient. He's using the negotiation framework that is available to him. This is just more posturing. If he has to choose between something like 5/$100 with $50+ million guaranteed or 1 year at $16 million it's a no brainer at his age which to choose. He will not be playing for the franchise tag.

And he is not being greedy, he should have been making over $15 million per year the last 3 years at least, but unfortunately there is no good way to compensate players who out perform their previous contracts.

Don't know why nobody else sees it that way - Bree's is not being loyal to the Saints here. No way Tom Brady would ever pull this with the Pats.

If Brees signs and plays for the tag this year he'd make less than Tom Brady.

I called tomorrow for the signing. I wish this would hurry up. It's starting to effect me emotionally....

Not sure if this is just another attempt by Florio to ruffle feathers.

and that Brees will ultimately play in 2012 under the one-year, $16.371 million franchise tag.

No way this will happen. Even if the Saints only give Drew $20 million a year for the first two years, that's 4 million more than the franchise tag with guarantees. Drew knows more than any other player what it’s like to get hurt while being franchise tagged and possibly not having a future in the NFL. If he gets hurt next year trying to pull extra millions out of the Saints he will have nothing and that also includes the 4 million he lost not signing the long term this year. What he is doing is waiting to the last second to sign because he has no reason to hurry now since he has come this far. He will see what last second deal breakers he can get out of the Saints and he should because he deserves it. I foresee the deal being signed Monday afternoon for 5 years/$98 Million with $21 Mil being given the first two years (which will hurt the Saints next year but at least we have Drew). Then a press conference with Drew and Mickey talking good about each other saying, "We knew this deal would be done" and all that other junk. Just relax my friends.

Of course I could be way wrong and then we should all freak out!

Like I said in the other thread, a couple of months ago, these same "in the know" people were saying how there was no way he'd play under the franchise tag because of what happened in Whale's Vagina.

They know as much as us.

I appreciate it, but I can't. I kept up with the thread. Pretty funny.

He'd only be losing out on about 1.6 million if he signs the tag and gets tagged again next year.

Still, all signs point to his signing the long term deal.

The reason for last week's hearing was to determine how much the Saints would have to pay if he's franchised this year and next year.

They can (and I think they have) structure the deal to include a large signing bonus that is prorated throughout the length of the contract for cap purposes while still paying him a large amount over the first three years of the deal.

Brees may agree to show up for training camp and the preseason only if the Saints agree to sweeten the one-year franchise tender by promising not to tag him again next year

bullshite.

That's why they went to arbitration. If Brees is tagged this year, he would welcome a tag next year as he would make $23 million since he won the arbitration.

The Saints wouldn't be able to tag him next year. THAT is why he has the upper hand in these negotiations.
