I think he could still be effective here, but it's hard to deny his decrease in production last year compared to his first two years here. I don't know if it is because he's slowing down, or if it was a 1 year fluke, but it was the right move by the Saints. This will allow us to address more important needs for the team.

I'll miss Sproles, but we needed the cap space and he may hit a sharp decline due to his age.... and we got a pick. Win/win for both teams.

I was hoping they would require at least a 4th to go to a NFC team, especially a good one!

The entire offensive unit struggled at times last year. WR's can't get open so we key in on Jimmy, but teams started to figure that out and triple him. We were painfully predictable with the screen pass, so that was hardly ever a force. And run blocking was a foreign concept to our OL. Yes, his return game has greatly diminished, but I still count last year as an anomaly. Address WR and OL and we fix a lot of problems.

I'm mad because fanboys feel in love with a player, I don't fall in love with em. He served his purpose, I appreciate that.....But yall can't say that he is a SMALL, AGING RUNNING BACK with a particular set of skills that can be utilized by a variety of players in our system.

I don't even know what you're trying to say. You're mad because people really like him? K.

I think the FO did the right thing for the team. There's no need to just say he sucks right now, because a) it's not true and b) you just sound fickle and petty.

He was not the same after he came back from his injury in the back half of the season. In the 1st half of the season he was still pretty damn quick and dangerous. I don't know what the "he sucks" people are smoking either.

This.

It reminds me of recruiting when we are all big on a player until he decides to go elsewhere, then we never needed him.

I never said he sucks..........What I'm trying to say is obvious....some love Sproles and feel he was worth 3.5 million because of the past........the present says he isn't and his lack of production combined with his skill set is why. Thats not saying he SUCKS, he just isn't what he used to be.

I don't sound fickle or petty, you just probably have a Sproles jersey........

I think the biggest reason for the lack of production is that defenses began scheming for him b/c he was our biggest asset. We didn't have WRs to open up the field and no running game to speak of so the screen pass was our entire offense in some games. It became very obvious and easily stopped.
Sproles will still be successful but can't be the focus of a team's offensive game plan.

I would have loved to keep him, but if they weren't going to resign him, they got a good deal with the 5th (maybe hit another homerun like Stills) and cleared 3.5 mil in cap space.

Once he starts producing in Philly, these same morons will curse Loomis for only getting a fifth.

who said he sucks? I am saying he is overrated, but I don't think he sucks. He will probably do better in Phi than he did here last season; however, he is not the great player you and others are making him out to be. He had a great season followed by 2 average ones.

You guys realize that trading Sproles for a 5th, which frees up $3.5M this year actually covers Jairus Byrd's cap hit for 2014?

Loomis, you goddamn wizard.

Yeah, OK. If he couldn't do it for the Saints then lightening in bottle happens again in a new city.

Taking Sproles off the books puts the Saints at $1,971,157 MIL in cap space.
