Why is it so unbelievable that Payton might be interested in AJ? AJ is better than Chase Daniel and Chase was the backup for years. I never once said that Payton was trading Brees to get AJ.

Because you are making it out to be more that it is. It is Bama's Pro Day, where Saints personnel are watching ALL of Bama's draft eligible players.

No one attended an AJ only event as you implied.

well for one, we blocked the Rams from adding Griffin and put him on our roster last year.

2, we have Drew Brees and we aren't going to use an early round pick on a QB

3, your article had nothing to do with Payton being interested

To be fair, it was AJ's pro day seeing how he was there. The article only talked about Payton's interest in AJ. That was the reason for the title.

no it didn't. It was buried deep in the article, and never mentioned any interest

Who said anything about where AJ would get drafted. Yeah, there are no quotes in the article from people there that made it sound like Payton was interested in AJ.

What? Sure, the Saints could be interested in AJ if he goes undrafted. We've invested in Griffin and thought highly enough to block another team from getting him and give up a roster spot. We aren't going to burn a pick on a QB when they are so valuable to the Saints right now.

did you link a different article?

first off, the article isn't even about AJ.

quote:

There was no shortage of heavy hitters on hand to see what McCarron could do. Among them was New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, who greeted McCarron, according to ESPN's Danny Kanell:

quote:

Saints HC Sean Payton just walked all the way across practice field to give personal hello to AJ McCarron. Saints could be a good fit IMHO

this is the only part of the entire thing even about AJ and Payton.

No where does it use the word interest or says anything about payton's views towards AJ as a player

AJ McCarron looks very good passing right now. His 3, 5 & 7 step drops look good. His ball placement is on point. Sean Payton is impressed.

so where does that mention that we are interested in drafting him?

Are you being intentionally ignorant to the Saints already having a backup QB that we think highly of?

Or do you honestly think that the Saints would draft a backup player in the top 3 rounds (where AJ is projected to go)?

By all accounts, his combine and pro day throwing efforts killed any knocks on him other than "he isn't a great athlete", but you don't need to be to play QB. I think it isn't hard to be happy for him if you're not a Bama fan, especially once you see the high character he has.

That said, I don't think he's a fit here. A team like New England or Denver? Sure, makes sense, but Brees will have a few more years than Peyton/Brady right now, so AJ would sit for too long.

You are right, there is absolutely no interest there. That is probably what he told him when he went out of his way to talk to him. "AJ, I came here to tell you in person that I am not interested in you at all."

You can't be serious here. He goes to LSU's pro day every year too. It is his job. He can know who AJ is, talk to him, respect him, but not have an interest in drafting him.

It makes absolutely no sense for the Saints to draft him. Period.

I could give 2 fricks about where he plays college ball. I think he has potential.

Drafting him would undermine every move the Saints have made in backloading contracts. Saints are happy with Griffin, we blocked other teams from getting him. We just hired his QB coach from Tulane because we liked his development so much

How about this?

I fricking hate Bama, but I LOVE Sean Payton, and I trust him to do what we have to do to be a successful team.... If he thinks AJ is good and wants to draft him, them I am behind that decision.

As for the article... Payton, being an offensive coach, is going to (naturally) be interested in what he sees from offensive players. If AJ really Looks good and CSP thinks there is any chance we would have a shot at him where we would like the value (at any point), I can see why he would go introduce himself.

Neither the article, nor the OP, said we plan to draft AJ just because CSP introduced himself to him.
