Geno Atkins/Aaron Donald and Jerull Casey are all around the same size
Production was not a problem
He had 14 Sacks and 26 TFL over the past 2 seasons and 2014s production was on a loaded Louisville defense.
He's one of the safest guys you can get

I don't understand why we would go with a DT at 12. The position is so deep this year.

Because no two DTs are equal in talent, scheme fit, and mental aptitude. If Rankins checks off all of the boxes, and is the BPA on the Saints' board, there's no reason they shouldn't take him.

I agree. The 2nd round looks really good for DT's, but if Rankins is there then he's the pick imo(assuming the coaches like him). A run of DT's could go right before our pick in the 2nd round, and we could be forced to take someone that we aren't very confident in.
