Somewhat irrelevant b/c if we cut him or he retires that goes to $0 anyway

or get paid the $1.2M to ride the IR train 1 last year.

Would be the most beneficial route. Again, I think the NFL may have issues with it, though.

Ok I guess I was confused. Using fake #’s. Let’s say he was owed $10M even though injured. Instead of retiring, he could just say pay me my $10M.

He is not getting any money, it's just on the paper ledger as to how much money he has allocated to him. I believe the purpose of reducing to the league minimum is to get under the cap at the start of the new NFL calendar year.

This move does not affect am in any way, he gets the same money so it's just a standard move to help the org that helped him.

The question is does it really help. You can take a huge dead hit in 25 or spread to 25/26. As usual we punished the 26 cap.

I feel so lost with all of this. Isn't this just more of the same and kicking the can down the road again?

It was expected but yes. The decision was to spread the hit into 2026. If you are a season ticket holder, hold your powder until at least 2027 and sit 2 years out while we go 8-26 with a new regime.

When you start off at $60+M over the cap, some cans need to get kicked. This was an inevitable move as Ram has basically been done for 2 years now. He helped the team tremendously by reworking his salary (that he was not going to receive anyway) in a way to get more relief now than had he just flat out retired.

The kick the can approach that is going to piss off a lot of people is when some of these vets (Carr, Cam, Hill...) have their salary restructured into bonuses making it impossible to move on from them for at least another 2 years. I think the ultimate, save the franchise move that will need to happen (and piss off everyone on this site) will be when they extend Carr to add more actual years because his void money is going to be stupid expensive.

His salary will more than likely get offset by an insurance settlement due to medical condition.

Gave away 70 million, another Clowwn show decision to give him a second contract. He was already sitting out practices in his 4th year. Never played close to a full season and sucked. The Saints never know when to cut Bait, and this cost them a fortune

Exactly!! Besides Loomis inability to transition cap strategy between competitive times and rebuilding times, his history is atrocious in valuing players. He holds onto declining players too long and thus devalues their return to the team. Then, when he does have a player with good value, he trades them at below value deals.

For those needing a dose of reality, the cap problem is not going to go away by 2027. This year there is $48 mil in dead cap space. To get under the cap for 2025, Loomis is going to have to push out about another $50 dead cap this year going into 2026. If lucky, the dead cap space in 2027 will be around $30 mil because the team cannot clear $50 mil dead cap in one year and still meet league roster without pushing more dead cap into the future.

If they cut Carr they are going to take on about $ 25 mil dead cap in 2026 to save another 25 dead cap in 2025. But, they are not going to really save $25 mil in 2025 per se, because the team is going to bring in another vet QB to replace carr. To sign another vet QB, the deal will be structured for yet more future dead money for the team to take on around 2027.

This reads like the site and astute fans here are the problem. Out of curiosity, who should not be pissed off besides Carr when this happens?

Well described. Almost criminal malpractice by Saints ownership. The coaching search is really irrelevant given the immediate handcuffs he will be wearing.

Another prophecy of SFP will come true.

I'll be mad, but at least I'll have that.

Yup. I predict they will move at least $25 mil of 2025 cap through an extension adding on one more year to 2027. They will have a player option clause and will make Carr a June cut this splitting his dead cap to about $13 mil for 2027 and 2028. Maybe, MAYBE that will be the end of this stupid cap saga.
