as for my grade I go with D+ mostly due to the lack of ability to capitalize on what could have been. Both the Chargers and the Pats traded up near both of our picks so there were teams looking to move into the range of both of our picks. In reality they could and should have traded back and still gotten the same quality of talent but in more quantity IMO. Also could have taken Brown at DT and still got a pretty damn good LB @ 44. You would then be talking about two major holes filled on Defense right off the back. The Peat pick, if beneficial will pay dividends after the Brees era IMO. Not saying he won't start but that he won't keep Bree's upright.

It's not like the chargers didnt trade down right after us. We could have easily dropped 5 spots minimum, scoring us another 4th-5th round pick and still could have easily addressed our needs.

Chargers knew saints weren't going to take Gordon so why would they pay for that spot when they can get the player they want a pick later?

Somebody out there wanted Devante parker at 13 and was willing to trade up for him. We just either wanted too much or didn't want to shop the pick at all. We got greedy

Or they had Peat highly graded and weren't willing to let a talent like that go. He could be a top 5 player on the Saints draft board, and at 13 that would be immense value. We just don't know that so most can't accept the pick.

A cop out?

You're the one claiming to have inside knowledge of teams begging to trade up, the Saints refusing those offers or trying, and knowing who would've been around in later picks.

It's a draft, believe it or not those things happen at a draft

What were they willing to trade?

Or, they didn't want to offer fair value for the pick. 5 spots is worth more than 17 and a 5th. What you are suggesting is to just take any old pick and move down because you don't think anyone else was going to take Peat. Well what if someone else in need of a tackle moved to 16 after we made the trade and drafted him? If Peat was the guy the FO wanted, they absolutely did the right thing. I don't love the pick, not sure I even like it, but this is definitely a wait and see deal here. Some other team might be sending us their 3rd for Strief today, who knows?

As for Anthony, absolutely great pick. Yes one of the 3 ILB's would have been there at 44. Both were considerbly slower than Anthony. Both struggled in pass coverage and were thought of as 2 down players while Anthony is solid in both. We still have 44 and can easily get an OLB/WR/DL with the talent left on the board.

Kind of silly trying to grade a draft after the very first night.

Saints came away with a top rated tackle (maybe wasn't a pressing need but it O-line help is always a bonus) and a starting caliber MLB.

I'd say the team got better and therefore the 1st round was a success in my book.

If we can draft a DE, WR, and either a CB or an OLB today; we will have done well.

Solid draft. People are getting paid a lot more money than me to make these kind of decisions. I'll trust them.

LOL at the people saying "C-, D" yet they will never work for an NFL team.

So the entire Browns organization is smart and knows exactly what they've been doing the past 20 years because they work in the NFL right lol. I know how to fix my own toilet yet I will never be a plumber lol. Picks were mediocre no way of denying it.

Will strief get traded? Will Peat start? Will the Saints ever find a guard? And will the fanbase ever be happy with anything? Find out on the next exciting episode of Dragonball Z!

Spit out my coffee. Thank you for that, best laugh I have had in days.

It's funny that so many think it is easy to get the deal you want when trading back... If we didn't trade back, it is because no one offered us anything worthwhile.

Its very amusing.

"all we had to do is trade back a few spots....get extra picks...get some studs with those picks and bam we're better...no brainer!"

C but that's until I see what's going to happen with the rest of the OLine. Payton said there's no plan to Peat, Strief, or Armstead inside, so for now Peat looks like depth which would seem like a waste with that high of a pick. I love the Anthony pick though.
i have a hard time believing that one of them will be left on the bench. I understand what Payton is saying, but the goal has to be to put your best five out there.

I can't recall where because it was not relevant at the time but I saw someone on one of the major media outlets had peat as the best tackle. I wish I could remember where. So assuming the saints shared that thought, then perhaps they believed they were getting top 10 value. I really think they will sort out the 3 tackles thing. I am not worried about that. It is notable that the giants took flowers ahead of us. At a minimum that would have put peat next in line in terms of OL off the board if they traded back (if they could).

WR was not an option at 31, at least not value wise. My jury is still out on our pick there. I doubt this was their first choice at that pick, there were probably a few others that had a reasonable chance to be there but were not. That's the way the cookie crumbles. I don't think anyone thought indy would go WR.

I am glad we have the 44th pick, it would seem that we have a good opportunity to get a great player there.

I am much happier than years past with the outcome. Based on the moves this offseason and draft it is clear they are doubling down on keeping Brees into his 40s.

This. Exactly this.

This is stupid. San Fran traded back and got a 5th this year and next. The Lions traded back and got a 5th this year and next. Big fricking deal.

There was absolutely no value in trading back this year and we likely would have lost Peat to someone else had we done so.

Yea, that's a comforting thought. A 40 something at QB.
