Shouldn't Arthur get his own thread now? I thought that was how this was going to work?

Arthur really isn't a threat to anyone outside the Outer Banks or maybe the central NC coast. No one is really even posting about this storm outside a small group. It doesn't seem to justify a thread at this point.

Arthur is continuing the multi year trend of Atlantic systems getting dominated by dry air
Low shear environment with nice SST and a slowly intensifying sloppy looking storm...

That dry air should be leaving shortly

The appearance has really improved this morning now that the system isn't so tilted. It will be a interesting to see if this increased convection can maintain / improve in the coming hours or if it will be sacrificed to continue to moisten the column. It
will interesting to see what recon finds this afternoon.

Do you or rds work in meteorology or is this just a hobby?

I believe RDS works in meteorology? I'm just a hobbyist. I've taken classes on it but no formal degree and I help run a weather website..

Either way, I enjoy these threads. The charts and images you post along with the discussion paint a more detailed picture than what I can get from my apps. Really wish we had a weather board.

Thanks
Recon found 72 mph flight level winds, extrapolated to 66 mph surface winds..

What's the difference in the NOAA HH crew/planes and the AF crew/planes?

AF is military and NOAA is part civilian. The NOAA Aircraft typically are able to get more up close and personal with the storm. AF flights are based out of Biloxi, and NOAA AOC are based out of Tampa and AF flights are more common than NOAA

Got it. Are the NOAA missions new? I always assumed that the hurricane hunters have traditionally been Air Force.
Do they collect the same data? Are they both "commissioned" by the National Hurricane Center, or do they pretty much run on their own?

No, NOAA just does a bunch of other shite besides hurricane missions. They're both known as hurricane hunters. AF squad is made of Air Force Reserves, NOAA is made up of NOAA Scientists/Meteorologists. NOAA Hurricane Hunters work under the Aircraft Ops Center which is under the NOAA. AF is under agreement with NOAA for recon missions, and both hunters units are under command from the Chief Aerial Reconnaissance Coordination, All Hurricanes at the NHC, which is a unit of the AF 53d weather recon squadron..
