Ok well tell the teacher we worked hard on this and need to know the correct answer to the problem she provided

Trust me, 6 is correct first digit

You can't just decide what the answer is

I'd have to see your argument against 3. It's as sound an answer as 6, and it is a much more reasonable answer for 4th graders.

Yeah! Who are you?

I don't know why anyone would look at a pattern of numbers that reduce by half each time, then figure out what the denominator of each number is based off the first number in the sequence and do it that way
The only problem is the way it was written should have left it at a whole number at the end

Seriously?

Divide the number by its lowest factor greater than 1.
36/2
18/2
9/3
3
The question speaks of factors in other instructions, so it's reasonable to base the series off factors as well.
I agree that dividing by 2 was the obvious pattern, especially since there were only 3 numbers to go on. There would need to be an extra number somewhere to isolate any other pattern as the correct answer.

I see but I think y'all are taking this way further than it was meant to go for 4th graders
Posted on 9/26/14 at 9:45 am to Thib-a-doe Tiger
Well yea, but that was inevitable considering the teacher fricked up the question.
And the 6 answer doesn't hold for a true series, which goes in both directions and doesn't hone in on one number in the series as the basis for the pattern (ie dividing 36 by different numbers).

6 is WAY more reasonable that your explanation for 3

Guess it does follow the directions and I was right.
Still a screwed up question though.
