Down to 6,700 and says it still has 33 minutes until landing.
It is supposed to land at 2:11 PM CST.
2:41 PM is the estimated gate arrival.

It's definitely on approach to Grand Island.

hmmm, haven't done any digging but AA says it diverted, but they do use the same flight number in both directions in some domestic city pairs, could possibly have two 3500's in the air, they would use a suffix for atc to let them differentiate though

Maybe they caught a bird at TO.
I know from few threads you still follow TO procedure up to TO ALT. I do find it weird if they are not using comms.

Equipment or pressurization issue. Whatever it was happened early.

American Airlines has two flights daily leaving Garden City to DFW.
6 AM and 2:45 PM
It shows this is the 6 AM departure that didn't actually depart until 1:14 PM. Then it goes to Grand Island, Nebraska instead of DFW. Pretty strange for sure.

Why wouldn't they just return to the airport instead of flying and hour and a half away?

The distance from Garden City to Grand Island is only 246 miles. They're not going to climb that high for a flight of that distance so 12,000 feet isn't concerning at all by itself.
For example flights from Lake Charles to Houston are 150 miles on average and they only climb to 11,000 feet on average for those.

Maybe the issue didnt show up immediately?
I know 777 homebase use to be either DAL or DFW. I dont think you can essentially turn a plane around in a sinch with the amount of traffic in the air without significant diversions but this happened in the middle of flyover country. So im kinda with you there haha.

Aviate, navigate, communicate.

if that was it's intended destination, sure they would, under normal circumstances
