There is actually some truth to your sarcasm. There was a time when literally almost all of Americans’ consumption of apples was in apple cider. Apple growers wanted to sell more apples, so they needed to convince the public that you could do much more with apples than make cider. The “apple a day” slogan was part of that effort.
It’s a slogan I happen to believe, btw.
