The kid that passed away is related to a cousin of mine (she married into his family).

I made the mistake of looking at his social media and his mom just posted a video of him and his new boat one week ago. Underneath the video, someone posted "tell that boy to wear a life jacket with a kill switch especially when in the boat alone you never know what's floating in the water."

It sounds like this accident involved him riding in his friends' boat and not driving his own boat, but wow. The timing of that comment is eerie.

The problem is very apparent by number of people in threads like this that try to rationalize their drinking while boating.

I feel like the drunk driving threads don't get this many people defending. People generally shite all over drunk drivers in those.

I've been boating all of my life, have owned about twenty boats, have been out on hundreds of boats with other people, the only boats that I've ever been on that had no booze on board was my dad's bass boat when I was a kid hell, even the mud boats that would take us out to get in pirogues/John boats to go to the duck blinds at 4am had coolers of beer on them, doesn't mean everyone on them was shitfaced or that the operator was overdrinking, I have seen more overdrinking and irresponsible boating in LA more so than other places I've lived/boated though, you can boat safely and responsibly with the presence of alcohol on board

If you think a couple of beers is “a problem with alcohol” then you don’t know what “a problem with alcohol” is.

I doubt that seriously I was in the area before daylight and no one else was in the area at the time.

I did the same and if you check out the FB of the person that made that post, he reposted a pic of another’s boat motor that had the lower unit completely sheared away while driving in Pontchartrain at the mouth of the Tickaw.

Many, many more inexperienced boaters on the water and additional organic debris from Ida have made an already risky situation dangerous and deadly.

I've lived on Tickfaw River most of my life and I've never heard of as many accidents as I have this year.

Sadly, it's not surprising though when you realize that most of these kids are new boat owners and have never been taught the right/wrongs of the river. Not to mention they are all doing stupid shite just to post on TikTok and IG

I think the issue is that people think any kind of leisure activity requires alcohol.

People don't realize how quickly things can go to hell when boating...most also think they can drive anywhere if it's open water

No issues with troopers.

They seem to care about crabbing more than fishing.

I think their mission in AK is to protect the commercial guys. You know how it is, commercial vs recreational

Me driving a boat blasted outside of my mind would be far safer than the majority of people driving a boat sober.

Not that I'd do that, but go spend a few hours at Fred's on a nice weekend. Its damn near not safe to run a boat anywhere on the weekends in Louisiana anymore.

I don't go out much on the weekends anymore, except maybe early in the morning or late at night if they're doing fireworks, holidays neither, too many amateurs out there

There's a launch beside Boopalu's bar on the Tickfaw and I bet 4 out of 5 captains are intoxicated when coming off the river.

8A or first fish, whichever comes first.

However, if I’m operating my boat, I never drink. Doing 70+ with no brakes is hazardous enough without alcohol IMO.
