Another outstanding one: Crossing the Line, A Bluejacket's Odyssey in World War II. LINK

The author was an enlisted tailgunner on carrier-based torpedo bombers, and went on to earn his PhD from Yale and become a noted Shakespearian scholar, English professor, and Dean of the Princeton Graduate School.

Revolves around the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the aftermath. Was the inspiration for Quint's monologue in Jaws.

"The Last Battle" by Cornelius Ryan, story of the battle for Berlin, and why the Allies didn't go there

"Hitler's Naval War" by Cajus Bekker, a translation by a German author

The Ballantine illustrated series are good short studies of various aspects of the war

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. It will keep you busy for a while.

Also recently read Panzer Commander. It's good as well and written from the Gernan perspective.

Unbroken is an awesome survival/POW story as well.
