Lake Ouachita is a very large lake with islands scattered all over it. It's also in a state park so there's miles and miles of natural shoreline, no houses and not a lot of rental options on the lake itself. Lake Hamilton is in town and it's shore is lined with houses and the lake is more crowded, but you can find a rental property right on the lake, house or hotel.
Two very contrasting choices.
If money is no object, the houseboat idea on Ouachita is a blast. You can also go out on the lake in your own boat and claim your own island and set up a camp on it, tent, cooking, everything, stay as long as you like. Need something bigger than a jon boat because it doesn't take much wind to get choppy.
On Ouachita you can be in four feet of water and still see your toes, (if you're not fat) water is very clear and clean.
Rocky shoreline at Ouachita, not mud , so bring water shoes.

We just got back from there Sunday. We had a blast. We rented a house off of VRBO. Great place, I dont think they allowed pets though. Downtown is very nice. We plan on going back again.

The Great Passion Play/Shepard of the Hills- from what I've heard, and the area isn't as "churchy" as it once was.
That's not Hot Springs.

I ruined a prop on Lake Hamilton last year. The shallow spot was in the middle of the lake down near the fishery. Of course, the bottom is rocky up there so it made it worse. It shows up as shallow spot/island on google maps, but it was a couple of feet deep and wasn't marked at all at the lake.
We spent the day before on Lake Ouachita and all the coves and shallow areas were clearly marked. It's a corp of engineers lake, and marinas were on the lake, but that was the only development. When we went to Hamilton, with all the commercial development, we expected somewhat the same markers for shallow areas, and they didn't have anything.
Ouachita was great. Don't know if I'll take my boat back to Hamilton though.

Been up to that area and you can find some nice cabins, the Ozarks and that area are a little underrated, they have some nice lakes and rivers to adventure on if that's your thing.
Like it better than all the hustle and bustle of Branson and Gatlinburg. Not much traffic but if you want a lot of things to do it's probably not your thing, more of a laid back relaxing place than anything else. Found some decent hole in the wall restaurants as well.

Honestly, we flew in from Tampa, so I didn't notice whether it was pet friendly or not. Sorry..
We have also always been pleased with VRBO. This house was 2 stories, slept 10, and was only $200.00 a night without a deposit. Very affordable in Hot Springs.

Most things have been said already; Lake Ouchita in particular. Floating the Caddo River just West of there is fun. It's only about a 4 hour float but fun. If any kids then Magic Springs and discovery museum are a must.

Houseboat on Ouchita is simply a great vacation. Pull the bow up on an island, lay the gangplank, explore and start the grill while swimming and fishing. Even the diving at the damn is not too bad for freshwater and the flooded town is coll when the water is right.
