We have a similar one here that charges either $10 or $20/month. The $20 membership gets you unlimited tanning and you can bring a guest anytime you want among a few other minor perks. Guy that works there told me that the way they make their money is the $30 annual "maintenance fee" they charge every member on the rolls. They have like 3,000 members at one location of whom about 100-125 workout regularly (4-5 times per week). But when that $30 fee hits in August, it covers a LARGE % of the annual costs. The monthly fees are almost straight gravy. Not totally but you get the point. They do a good job of disguising the 'annual maintenance fee' in the paperwork so you don't notice it. Also, people sign up and never workout but forget to shut it off (cancel) bec the $10 is so small, they don't pay attention to it hitting their account every month. great business model.

I've been a member of one here in Columbia for 2 1/2 years, haven't had any problems except with their water fountain going out for a month and the water hasn't been as cold since they repaired it. That and they only have one free-standing barbell bench station, but I use dumbbells mostly so it's not a big deal...although they only go up to 75 lb dumbbells and I'm at the point where I need to start using a barbell to increase my bench.

I heard the heaviest weight is 60lbs. I guess it varies by location.

haha, I turn 40 this year and had decided a couple years ago to finally start hitting weights more earnestly. I started benching 2 55-lb dumbbells 10 times 3 sets and can now get 75s up 15 times in a set on a good day. I'm not sure how that translates to my bench press on a barbell but I've heard you can typically expect to bench roughly 25% more on a barbell than you can with dumbbells due to your stabilizer muscles working together more effectively.

PF for $10 a month is absolutely worth it. If you're one of those people that are all body builder hardcore serious about working out, then no, PF probably isn't the ideal place.

From what I've seen when I go, it's for casual gym goers who just want to be a little more healthy and get into good shape.

Out of all the negative things I've heard said about this place, 90% of those negative comments start off with "I heard from a friend" or "A buddy of mine who knows a guy whose dog groomer passed by once said they punch you in the genitals if you wear shorts..."

For $10, you will get more than your money's worth and don't let anyone tell you differently.

Is it true that planet fitness doesn't even have squat racks? I seen pictures and I thought they only had smith machines.

Yup, no squat racks and the dumbbells only go up to 70 lbs I believe. How can you call yourself a gym with only 70 lb dumbbells?

And if you don't know how to get a great workout by using a smith machine, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Smith machine is one of the worst things to happen in fitness.

Any news on the PF in Gonzales? I was thinking of the Zoo, then they opened the PF and that $10 month is very tempting. Im just getting back into it after a few years off so not concerned about the lack of heavy weights right now.

Is it? Tell me how please? Tell me how the average joe who works out twice a week is going to be able to tell the difference between using a bench press or a smith machine to work his chest?

Seems every PF is different based on the highest dumbbell weights and squat rack availability for each one. Mine goes up to 75 lb on dumbbells and has 2 squat racks.

Squatting in a smith machine is bad
